Today is International Women’s Day. Today is also the first day of the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy. The Special Olympics were founded by an extraordinary woman, my mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, in 1968. I continue to go to Special Olympic gatherings with my kids, not just because my mother started the organization or my brother Timothy Shriver runs it today, but because of the way the games make me feel. I go to Special Olympics events to be inspired. Special Olympic events help me rise above the noise. They reconnect me to my mother, and they connect me to the best of humanity from around the globe. I share this speech with you today from the opening ceremony of the 1987 Special Olympics World Summer Games. I share this message of hope, this message of inclusion, this message of love. May we embrace it, teach it, and pass it on. #internationalwomensday
