Elon Musk says steel killed carbon fiber on Starship at one-fiftieth the cost. Carbon fiber was supposed to be the future of rocketry. Lighter than aluminum. Stronger than steel. Trusted by every Formula 1 team. SpaceX picked it for Starship. "Particularly if you go for a high-strength specialized carbon fiber that can handle cryogenic oxygen, it's roughly 50 times the cost of steel." Then progress stalled. The autoclaves needed to cure the resin had to outsize every autoclave on Earth, and the team couldn't even produce a clean barrel section without wrinkles. Musk, watching the Mars timeline slip: "At this rate, we're never going to get to Mars. So we've got to think of something else." So he asked the question nobody at SpaceX had asked: "What about steel?" It became known as the **cryogenic stainless flip**. Musk, who had already shipped Falcon 9 in aluminum-lithium, broke with the textbook. BREAKING: PRINCIPAL OF ENOCH BURKE’S SCHOOL ‘MOVES ON’ - GIVEN NEW JOB AT TOP STATE EDUCATION BODY On Tuesday this week an email was sent to parents at Wilson’s Hospital School notifying that Principal Frank Milling will be moving on from the school, and taking up a post with the NCCA (the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment), a state body that advises the Minister for Education. Three years ago, in May 2022, Enoch Burke was commanded by the then Principal Niamh McShane to use the "they" pronoun for a 3rd year student. Very shortly after making that demand, Principal McShane (who had commenced a Stage 4 disciplinary process against Enoch Burke) left the school to become a Principal in Bandon, County Cork. She was replaced as Principal by Mr Frank Milling. Mr Milling treated Enoch Burke very badly. For turning up to work, he was shouted at, mocked, and humiliated. All the while Mr Milling was persistent in his promotion of LGBT in the school. In 2023, when Enoch Burke lay in a prison cell, unjustly, Frank Milling was posing at the school with the transgender pride flag and posting it up on the school's social media. Frank Milling has now been given a job with the NCCA - the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment - the official state body that advises the Minister for Education (Helen McEntee) on what young people should be learning in school. Hence, in the biogenic cycle, it actually is a very carbon-efficient kind of process. This technology is completely indigenous, designed in India in our R&D centre in Jaipur. Fully made in India, with very little imported content in the entire bike. This is something that we should be able to take to the world as an Indian product to solve the world's needs..."

Unless you're into bikes you may not have seen this style of belt before. This is a Gates Carbon Drive. It uses a central channel in the belt to keep it centered on the sprockets. The belt itself is reinforced with carbon fiber strands & strong enough to replace a chain. No maintenance, no noise, no lubrication necessary. There's a very slight hit in efficiency compared to a clean, fresh chain, but once dirt & higher power enter the picture, they prove superior in this regard. Gates offers many different sprocket designs & sizes for different applications, which is a good thing because they are not easy to machine compared to standard timing pulleys. I tried to make an off-the-shelf design work in this project, but sometimes you just have to go full custom, and that's exactly what I've done here. Can't wait to share more details of what this is when we get further along... Anyway, if you have an application that you're considering using a chain or timing belt and need a low profile setup, be sure to give this system a look over. It has many positives in its favor.
