‼️Finland's authorities seized control of a vessel suspected of damaging a data cable between Helsinki and Tallinn - Yle. The data cable was damaged today, and the anchor chain of the vessel was hanging in the water. The vessel, Fitburg, was going from St Petersburg, Russia to Haifa, Israel. It is flagged in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Fitburg is not on any official sanctions lists but has been highlighted as a vessel of interest by a sanctions monitoring platform. Fitburg was intercepted in Finland's exclusive economic zone, and the cable damage took place in Estonia's economic zone. 14 crew members were detained.

Fun fact: The first transatlantic internet cable is being pulled off the ocean floor right now. Almost no one knows it's happening. TAT-8 went live in 1988. First fiber-optic cable to connect Europe and the US. Isaac Asimov called it a "maiden voyage across the sea on a beam of light." The engineers behind it genuinely believed it might be the last transatlantic cable the world would ever need. The tech was so far ahead of copper they thought global bandwidth was solved. But it filled to capacity within 18 months. That forced the industry to immediately start laying more cables, a race between demand and infrastructure that still hasn't stopped. After developing a fault too expensive to fix, the cable was retired in 2002. It's been sitting on the seabed ever since. Now a small crew aboard this ship is dragging it back up. Meanwhile, Meta announced Project Waterworth last year, a 50,000 kilometer cable stretching across 5 continents, partly to feed the data demands of AI. ...The entire global internet runs on cables like this, built and maintained by a few thousand people working in places most of us will never see.

America’s own economy is built on military-civil fusion. Boeing sells civilian aircraft and builds weapons. Microsoft sells cloud services and takes Pentagon contracts. Intel and AMD power consumer devices and defense systems. SpaceX launches satellites and builds military networks. Palantir literally exists to serve intelligence and warfare. But when Alibaba, Baidu, BYD, or Tencent develop advanced technology, suddenly Washington discovers “national security.” Please. Every time the U.S. abuses “national security,” it is not because America is under threat. It is because America is losing market competition. An empire that once sold itself as open, innovative, confident, and fearless has declined into a paranoid gatekeeper, slamming the door on every competitor it can no longer defeat.
