General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan declares that Khartoum is now “free” after the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) recaptured it from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The army first seized Khartoum International Airport before advancing on key government sites, including the presidential palace. Soldiers secured the Manshiya Bridge over the Blue Nile, cutting off RSF reinforcements and leaving Jebel Awliya Bridge as the paramilitary group’s last exit route. The RSF, which controlled most of Khartoum since April 2023, has now been pushed south as the military consolidates its hold over the city. Their remaining strongholds are now outside the capital, with their forces still holding positions in Darfur. The war has displaced 12.5 million people and left parts of Sudan on the brink of famine. Foreign powers continue arming both sides, and diplomatic efforts to end the fighting have so far failed.
