Sudan’s brutal two-year war has entered a new, dangerous phase. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces seized control of the entire Darfur region, after ousting the Sudanese army from its last stronghold there. The fighting has killed over 40,000 people and displaced 14 million.

The army first seized Khartoum International Airport before advancing on key government sites, including the presidential palace. Soldiers secured the Manshiya Bridge over the Blue Nile, cutting off RSF reinforcements and leaving Jebel Awliya Bridge as the paramilitary group’s last exit route. The RSF, which controlled most of Khartoum since April 2023, has now been pushed south as the military consolidates its hold over the city. Their remaining strongholds are now outside the capital, with their forces still holding positions in Darfur. The war has displaced 12.5 million people and left parts of Sudan on the brink of famine.
