Category Labs is proud to introduce Cadence, our multiple-concurrent-proposers (MCP) consensus protocol that matches the optimal good-case latency of single-leader consensus while supporting arbitrarily short block intervals. When combined with BTX, our design for encrypted mempools, this represents a significant step towards solving the problem of MEV at the protocol level. In nearly every blockchain today, a single party ends up in control of each block: it decides which transactions get in, and can reorder them at will. MCP is the natural fix, but most recent designs pay for it with a separate aggregation phase, adding two extra communication rounds per block. Cadence makes the proposers part of consensus itself. Its fast path finalizes in an optimal three communication rounds, even when proposers are offline. Cadence also offers speculative finality, similar to MonadBFT, after just two rounds, revertible only if a proposer provably equivocated. In a simulation using estimated network delays between Monad mainnet's 200 globally distributed validators, finalization takes 219 ms on average, speculative finality 167 ms. Cadence pushes pipelining to the extreme: each block is proposed and finalized in its own independent consensus instance, without waiting on preceding blocks. The block interval then becomes a protocol parameter that can be arbitrarily small. At our initial target of 100 ms, a transaction waits on average just 50 ms to enter a proposal, and oracle prices, liquidations, and auctions can update every 100 ms. Cadence dynamically throttles the opening of new instances to bound the number of outstanding slots even during periods of network instability. When the network is healthy (under synchrony), a transaction included by an honest proposer can be neither dropped nor deferred (short-term censorship resistance), and no proposer can see the others' proposals in time to react (hiding). We prove both, together with safety and liveness under partial synchrony at the optimal 3f+1 fault bound. The Cadence protocol is modular: each module is simple on its own, and any of them can be swapped out without touching the rest. Cadence also builds on components already being deployed: proposals are disseminated as erasure-coded chunks over Deterministic RaptorCast, now rolling out on Monad, and validators vote on proposal digests, so voting does not wait for the full data to arrive. I'm not sure about you, but I had no idea until now that the ending of Psycho (released across the USA on this day, September 8, 1960) involves a superimposition of three elements that many people fail to notice. The last shot of Norman Bates’ face has a still frame of a human skull superimposed on it. That skull is his Mother’s. This dissolves into a shot of the chain pulling out Marion’s car out of the swamp. The chain is placed so that it appears to be moving through where Norman/Mother’s heart would be, symbolically showing that the two are tied together. I have slowed down the movie frames considerably so you can see the superimposition for yourself.

Then color reveals the setup: guy walks up with a drink, delivers a line, she gives him a one-sentence answer that changes the picture, he pauses, then kisses her anyway. None of them exist. It's fully generated, both halves. - What used to be four problems is now one clip Character consistency across a cut - same two faces in B&W and in color. Two-person dialogue with alternating lip sync - three separate English lines, all on time, all matching mouth shapes. Nightclub lighting - low light, saturated color wash, moving sources - was the last hard lighting environment for AI video to render without collapsing into noise. And a kiss - two faces contacting without merging into each other, which has been one of the persistent tells. Any one of these has been solvable for maybe six months. All four in one sketch was still a demo-reel problem in early 2026. - The B&W cut is doing two jobs The editing choice isn't style. It's engineering. Splitting a 15-second sketch into two 5-7 second clips means the model only has to hold consistency inside each segment, not across the whole thing. Monochrome also hides small differences between the two generations - if the girl's face is 3% off between the halves, B&W flattens the delta. Color grading in the second half does the reverse job. Two seams, both hidden by the aesthetic. - The comic beat is the actual craft Generating a kiss is one problem. Generating a kiss that lands as a punchline is a different one. The half-second where he pauses, processes, and decides not to care - that timing has to be prompted specifically. The default output of every current model is a rushed sequence with no beats. Deadpan comic delivery out of AI video means the operator wrote the prompt the way a screenwriter would - pauses, reactions, holds, all specified frame by frame. - What it costs Two 5-7 second clips at $3-5 each with in-model audio. Locked character references for both actors so the faces match across the cut. Prompt structured as a mini-script with beat notation. Realistically 40-60 rerolls to land the timing on all three spoken lines and the kiss. Under $200 in compute. A weekend from concept to publish-ready. - What this actually opens Short-form comedy has been the one segment of content nobody was making with AI video yet, because you can't fake comic timing when your output has drift and glitches. That barrier just came down. Which means every sketch account, every meme page, every stand-up clip factory now has a pipeline that doesn't require booking actors, renting a location, or getting a laugh out of a live crew. Apparently, I saw this video online and I decided to share. What this worker is applying is called bitumen, or what many of us know as bituminous coating. Most people think a wall is a solid, impenetrable block, but in reality, it is more like a sponge. Concrete and blocks have microscopic pores that pull water from the earth through a process we call capillary action. This thick black substance is the shield that stops that water from climbing up into the house. It is not about making the wall look good because this part will be buried under the dirt forever. It is about creating a skin that water cannot breathe through. When do you need to do this? The need for this arises because the soil is a very aggressive environment. Water is not your only enemy.. The ground also contains salts and sulfates that want to eat away at the cement. If this moisture finds its way to the steel bars inside the columns, those bars will start to rust. And when steel rusts, it expands, and that expansion is what cracks the concrete from the inside out. This coating is the only thing standing between your foundation and that kind of slow destruction. Thats is why if you see wet patches at the bottom of your walls inside your house, it usually means someone skipped this step or did it poorly during construction. You can apply this anytime you are building parts of a structure that will stay in contact with the ground. It is common in areas where the water table is high or where the soil stays damp for most of the year. This is a one-shot opportunity. Once you backfill the soil, you can never go back to fix it without a lot of expense and a lot of digging. It is about having the foresight to protect the heart of the building while it is still exposed. Please don’t ignore this if you need to. If you ignore it now to save a bit of money, you will be funding the future decay of your own home. I hope this helps.

From International Space Station, we have a unique vantage point to observe lightning storms from directly above them. Much like from the ground, they appear as rapid, intense flashes that are over as quickly as they started. But, with the help of handheld cameras and a bit of practice (and, admittedly, some luck), we can capture these intense flashes with a very high frame rate then slow them down to see how the lightning propagates. It's lightning, in slow motion. This is one that occurred over Indonesia on 6/28. I shot it for a half second at 1/120 frame rate, so, 60 separate frames. I then compiled those frames into two videos: the first, in real-time, and the second, slowed down so that each frame is a half second to highlight the progression of the flash. Note the incredible burst of light in one frame, which includes what is likely a TLE on the upper left. A TLE, or Transient Luminous Event, is an electrical discharge that happens in the upper atmosphere above lightning storms (if you haven’t seen Ferry Farhan TLE photo from last week, head over to her page). As their name implies, these are transient, or short lived, phenomena – it appeared in only one frame of the sequence, lasting for no more than 1/120th of a second. From International Space Station, we have a unique vantage point to observe lightning storms from directly above them. Much like from the ground, they appear as rapid, intense flashes that are over as quickly as they started. But, with the help of handheld cameras and a bit of practice (and, admittedly, some luck), we can capture these intense flashes with a very high frame rate then slow them down to see how the lightning propagates. It doesn’t matter what material you build your house from, when a fire, fueled by high winds hits, it’s not being saved. This is from a “small” recent fire in Gatlinburg area that got close to a house I owned. Took out quite a few homes. The wind just carries the sparks everywhere and often the fires start at the roof level (not the ground or side of the house). Once the roof area is hit, it’s all over. The fire will burn the house from the inside out. And it doesn’t matter if it’s a metal roof…think of all the wood components that metal roof attaches to and the eaves, soffits, etc. Just one spark can start a fire. When the wind is blowing at 60-80 mph gusts, you’re getting millions of sparks. The fires also get into the tree tops (especially of pine) and then balls of fire can also start raining down in clumps onto houses below as well. ICF, poured walls, concrete block….all irrelevant when you have a massive fire coming your way.

A friend of mine just recently got his first gun, a striker fired Glock 19. He is terrified to leave a round chambered. To anyone reading this who has this same fear, I want to alleviate your concerns. I'm going to explain why there is nothing to be afraid of. First and foremost, I fully understand your concern. It's not irrational. And you're not stupid for being nervous about a bullet being aimed at your leg with the striker cocked back under spring tension about an 1/8 of an inch from the primer. I get it. I shared this concern when I was new to carrying. But your fear is due to a lack of understanding of the internal safety features of a modern striker fired handgun. On a properly maintained modern striker fired pistol the striker CANNOT hit the primer on the chambered round without the trigger being pulled. Can't. Not shouldn't. Can't. (If you have any good Sig P320 jokes, this is the proper place to share them) There is a block that the striker will hit and stop if it is released without the trigger being depressed. It works just like a lock and key. There is a channel in the blocker that the striker can pass through if it is in the fire position. It only goes into the fire position if the trigger is pulled which pushes the blocker into the fire position. A spring keeps the blocker firmly in the block position until then. The blocker is a solid piece of steel that won't break. And if your gun is securely in a hard sided Kydex holster nothing can move the trigger unless it is unholstered. Many guns like Glocks have a trigger safety that prevents the trigger from moving due to force of dropping. Your finger has to be on the trigger safety to move it. So the gun cannot fire unless you pull the trigger. And it's easy for you to test this safety feature to see how it works! See the video below. You can try to push the striker forward by moving that piece at the back of the slide forward. That piece is the back of the striker. Push it forward and it will stop. The tip won't come out through the breach. You see it trying to come through but it gets stuck. Now push that little button in. That is the actual blocker. When you push it in you will now be able to move the striker forward through the breach and see how it will strike the primer. You can test this easily every time you disassemble your pistol to verify it is still working. You can break this safety feature by removing the blocker or losing the spring. But if it's there it will work. (You would be the first person in firearms history who has ever lost a spring. Literally the first one. It has never happened before. 😐) But it doesn't come out as part of regular maintenance. You have to disassemble the firing assembly to get it out. That won't happen by accident. And if you do that on purpose you should do this blocker test when you reassemble it to make sure the safety feature is working. My video shows a Glock slide. All Glocks will look like this. Other brands may put the blocker in a different spot or it may be a slightly different shape. But they all (mostly) have the same design. If you test yours as demonstrated and it works like mine does, your gun WILL NOT fire without pulling the trigger. (If you just thought of another P320 joke, this is another good place to toss that out there)
