Schallenberg: The situation in Kosovo is unsustainable; the responsibility now lies with Pristina The current situation in Kosovo was unsustainable, Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Schallenberg said today in a statement for Kosovo Online and called on both sides to take urgent, concrete measures to de-escalate the situation and to re-engage in dialogue. If they did not engage, it would have negative consequences, Schallenberg added. "The expectations of the European Union and Austria are clear, especially towards Kosovo, which has been called to end police actions near municipal buildings in the north, which must ensure that mayors do their work in other locations and organize new elections as soon as possible, in which we also expect the participation of the Serbs in the north of Kosovo," Schallenberg said. He pointed out that both parties now had to take steps to end the "crisis mode" and work on a sustainable solution within the dialogue, under the leadership of Josep Borrell and Miroslav Lajcak. The head of the Austrian diplomacy, therefore, welcomed the fact that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, in talks with Borrell in Brussels yesterday, had agreed on the need for new elections in four municipalities in the north of Kosovo. At the Europa-Forum Wachau, Schallenberg emphasized that dialogue had no alternative, and added that the responsibility currently lay with Pristina, adding that the situation had changed compared to 10 years ago. On the other hand, he stated that the arrest of Kosovo policemen was unacceptable. "The 'status quo' cannot be maintained and Pristina must understand that it is necessary to create a situation where everyone feels safe," Schallenberg said.
