Sky News are reporting this morning a timeline of Keir Starmers time in the CPS…. 2008-2013: Sir Keir Starmer was director of public prosecutions (DPP), head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) which conducts criminal prosecutions in England and Wales, for five years. 2009: The CPS was criticised for not prosecuting Rochdale grooming gang suspects in 2008 and 2009. It said the main victim was "unreliable" so dropped the case. 2010-2011: In that financial year, child sexual abuse prosecutions reached 4,794 - the highest during Sir Keir's time as DPP. In 2016/17, there were nearly 7,200 prosecutions. 2011: The decision to not prosecute in Rochdale was overturned by Nazir Afzal, chief prosecutor for northwest England, appointed by Sir Keir. 2013: A Home Affairs Committee report said unlike other agencies, the CPS had "readily admitted victims had been let down by them and have attempted both to discover the cause of this systemic failure and to improve the way things are done so as to avoid a repetition of such events". Was Keir Starmer responsible for the decision NOT to prosecute Jimmy Saville? Keir Starmer was head of the CPS when the decision was taken not to prosecute Saville in 2009 but the decision was taken by a local CPS lawyer who decided there was not enough evidence to proceed. So he maintained it was not his decision. He later apologised after a review in 2011 (once Saville died & it all came out) for the CPS shortcomings but maintained he was not personally involved. At the end of the day the buck stops at the top & HE WAS THE HEAD OF THE CPS, so he has to take responsibility. It was a work trip, but we had about three days where we could stay and travel there as well. I feel like those three days—Mae Yui was there too, the three of us. 🗣️: Mae Yui— 🐱: Okay, just the two of us—fine, let’s say it was just the two of us. 🤣 🐶: Mae Yui was just there to eat. 🐱: I feel like during that time, we were both really being ourselves. We didn’t have anything to worry about. Once work was done, there was nothing stressful left, and we could just live our lives freely. During the day, he went shopping, and we went out to eat. Greg Brockman talks about when OpenAI first realized that AGI can't be achieved with "Non-Profit" status and the decided to abandon its Non-Profit roots. "In 2017, we started to think very hard about, first of all, how do we really achieve the mission? How do we actually build an AGI? What will that look like? And we started to do the math on compute. You start to realize that it is going to take a big computer. We came across a company called Cerebras, which was building a unique piece of computing hardware. The kind of computer that they were promising, we realized, was going to be far advanced from where our compute calculations looked. As you start to realize, if we could buy a lot of those computers, we could actually probably succeed at building an AGI. If we could get exclusive access to Cerebras, that could give us an overwhelming advantage. If we could buy very large data centers, that could be something unique as well. The thing about nonprofit fundraising is that I think there is essentially a cap to what is possible there. And so Elon, Sam, Ilya, and I all agreed that the only path forward for OpenAI, and the only path to achieve the mission, was to create a for-profit entity associated with OpenAI in some form.
