Don't we kind of need to solve fusion first??

Stable nuclear fusion? Show me the data, not the sales pitch.

Space Heater

Fuck yeah! Tug boats of the future are highly likely to be better than increasing on board propellant systems to reduce complexity and cost overall of each system. I still wanna rock a multi-armed fusion driller to mine asteroids myself... Maybe once I upload into a bot...

Still in development

Plot twist: the fusion drives required don't exist. I have a competing plan where you just go to your destination by wishful thinking.

Sunbird is the latest bastard offspring fathered by the Govt on the aging NASA-Tech alliance; likely stillborn, and by definition of its own proponents not suited to use in 'Orbital Space' (Inner system manned travel). Grok comparison to the Bussard Polywell Fusion Rocket:

"Sunbird is a nuclear fusion-powered spacecraft concept **VIDEO** developed by Pulsar Fusion to reduce deep-space travel time." There I fixed the statement for you.

Unless we can create helium-3 at cost soon we shouldn’t even spend the money …….

Pretty cool - wonder if we'll ever see one. Hey @grok how much helium-3 is recoverable on Earth, and where is the next most abundant source?

Now we need to be able to create anti-deuterium, have it interact with deuterium, and be able to safely regulate the reaction.

Sunbird is straight-up next-level. Pulsar Fusion turning fusion propulsion into a practical space tug from LEO with that Dual Direct Fusion Drive? If the D+He-3 tech actually works in testing, we’re talking about slashing deep-space travel times from months to weeks and making the solar system feel way more accessible. This could genuinely be the fastest self-propelled spacecraft humanity ever builds. Hyped to watch it move from concept to reality

I've been hearing this advanced propulsion stuff for 50+ years now. Wake me if there's ever something than vaporware.

I know where lots of Helium-3 has been accumulating for eons. 👍

Oh wow. I have a concept for a nuclear spacecraft concept and mine is better than yours. Mine has a gender neutral person that screams at you and acts as a space blower instead getting a space tug from Low orbit. I have proof of concept. You have AI videos. Not the same.

That type of thrust isn’t in the nuclear electric propulsion.

First plasma in the Sunbird exhaust test system just a few weeks ago that's a real milestone for Pulsar Fusion. They're using deuterium + helium-3 for an aneutronic reaction (way less neutron damage, which is smart for a long-life space engine). The plan is to turn this into a Dual Direct Fusion Drive that acts as a reusable orbital tug Still early days though plasma confinement is step one, not net power or actual thrust yet. Orbit demo targeted for 2027. If it scales, Mars transit times could drop dramatically

Until Propulsion fuel is space dust... You're not trying.. Nuclear is not the future of space travel. Using helium 3 is a ridiculous undertaking..

This looks like a crazy idea! Does Sunbird or anyone from their team have an X handle? Any timelines from them? What exactly is a "tugboat" - how is this kind of propulsion different from conventionally burning propellant and ejecting the fuel tank when emptied? And carrying the Deuterium/Helium3 fuel for fusion, wouldn't that also be a weight like carrying propellant fuel? And give me some numbers on the thrust ratios this Fusion fuel could theoretically achieve in comparison to the best SpaceX fuel.

At least make a high quality grift AI video. The concept is cool however, the UK (where Pulsar based) could spend it's entire space budget between now and then on this and not pull this off.

@grok explain how this would be faster than starship

Point that flame right at earth!

If it works, you’re looking at continuous thrust not short burns, that means weeks to Mars not months, but fusion in space still has zero flight proof - Dawn | @TheHumanDawn

Helium 3?

@GiantLeap I'm so ready! 🚀🌗😎

One teeny tiny problem is achieving sustained nuclear fusion

Been following Pulsar for a while now, really interesting company, this was their latest bit of News

Important factoid: By the time of the final scene in Back To The Future, Doc Brown has replaced the Delorean's fission reactor with a much better and safer fusion reactor, called Mr. Fusion, that runs on garbage and beer instead of dangerous plutonium.

wow, no radiators, not only have you solved fusion but you seem to have cracked the very laws of thermodynamics too

Let’s put data center money into this

@grok is there any research papers or evidence to suggest that Deuterium Helium engine is possible?

Fusion powered? We might want to get that making electricity on earth first

If they are smart they will use it to catch incoming manned capsules, reducing their re-entry speed.

Well Helium-3/deuterium fusion is a ways off technologically afaik. Once there is an economic incentive for it then it will take off I'm sure.
