Sunday Igboho has stylishly become a hero in Yoruba land. He'll be using this his network very well and can generate funds from the hands of politicians. He didn't subject his people to stay at home neither did he kill his people. But one idiot at Sokoto prison will learn how to use influence positively.

This is quietly a private army. That's how men go rogue. This should be checked by the govt before it escalates.

Nigerians suppose sabi say this na ethnic militia answerable to Tinubu, but if we like make we dey unlook. Na him wey go feed and clothe these people, and so na to him dem go get loyalty. Of course all this na prelude to 2027. @HQNigerianArmy just dey sleep like nothing dey happen, meanwhile in broad daylight a civilian don create a whole military division, in fact this division dey bigger than many actual divisions.

Another grassroots initiative taking shape, but the real test is how they'll work alongside official security agencies without causing conflict.

My opinion: the initiative reflects the frustration many communities feel about insecurity, but 15,000 people joining a security network is both an opportunity and a serious responsibility. Community-based security can be valuable because local residents often understand their terrain, communities and criminal patterns better than outsiders. If properly structured, Iru Ekun could help with intelligence gathering, early warning, community surveillance and cooperation with the police and other legitimate security agencies. But there is a major danger: a large vigilante-style organisation can quickly become problematic if it operates outside the law. Recruitment numbers should not be celebrated by themselves. What matters is training, screening, command structure, accountability and strict rules against harassment, extortion, arbitrary arrests and vigilantism. The Federal and state governments should not simply watch such initiatives from the sidelines. If the network is genuinely intended to improve security, authorities should establish clear coordination mechanisms with the police and other security agencies, while ensuring that only legally authorised security functions are performed. And I would be cautious about the 15,000 figure until independently verified. Large membership claims can generate political momentum, but security policy should be based on verified numbers and measurable outcomes. Bottom line: If Iru Ekun becomes a disciplined community-intelligence network that complements official security agencies, it could be useful. If it becomes a parallel force operating beyond the law, 15,000 members could become a security problem rather than a security solution.

Supporters see it as complementary: Igboho says the federal government will train members and the state will deploy them, which is smarter than a fully rogue outfit. The risks are equally clear. Nigeria already has Amotekun plus police and military. Another large, personality-driven network raises questions of command, accountability, funding, and whether it stays crime-focused or drifts into ethnic or political use. History of vigilante groups in Nigeria shows they can help short-term and create new problems later if discipline and oversight slip. The movement’s value will be decided by results and restraint, not rally size. If it works with existing agencies, accepts clear rules, and targets criminals regardless of identity, it can add capacity. If it becomes a private army loyal to one figure, it becomes a liability.
