The fly agaric, Amanita muscaria, is so named as it was used to control the invasion of flies into houses before window screens were available. Poisonous to flies and even dogs, it typically does not kill humans but can be dangerous because in high doses it causes delirium or even induces erratic behavior, even unconsciousness. Hence you could die of hypothermia if you were incapacitated outside. Although easy to identify, the subject of fairy tales, Norse fables (the berserkers) and suggested to be associated with the origin story of what we know as the modern day Santa Claus, this can be a DANGEROUS species, dose dependently. I do NOT recommend consuming this species until scientists better understand its complexity. But….what a GORGEOUS mushroom!

As far as if there's anybody who knows a lot more about the phenomenon (could be more than one intelligence) and its intentions than we do? I have shared my opinion on that question a few times. Yuraq Rumi, also know as Ñusta Hispana is a site that few people visit because of its remoteness. It is about a 6-hour drive west of Cusco. It’s been on my list for years and I finally had a chance to go there last week. This imposing monolith of white granite (covered with black fungus), whose name means "White Rock" in Quechua, is as mysterious as it is mind-blowing, given the apparent randomness and precision of all these cuts in such hard rock. I was lucky enough to visit while archaeological excavations were underway. Two new excavation pits are set to open this week, including one at the base of the monolith, as indicated by the white strings visible on the ground. Archaeologists have already found metal artifacts buried in the ground. I'll do my best to keep you updated on any new discoveries coming out of this exciting project. It was inspiring to walk along with my hardworking TN Forest Department team across the rugged mountains and grasslands that are the Tahr’s abode, alongside Thiru Yash Veer IUCN India & Collector & DM, The Nilgiris. Using the Varudai app, we captured field data with greater precision under Project Nilgiri Tahr, now in its next phase with the Third synchronised survey across 14 divisions, 43 ranges, 124 beats, and 177 blocks, covering over 3,100 km with 800 staff. From 1,031 Tahrs in 2024 to 1,303 Tahrs in 2025, this iconic State Animal of Tamil Nadu is showing great signs of recovery.
