What was up with videogames trying to market to 90s kids using gross-out humor?

Gross out was the hallmark humor of the 90s - 2000s and I remember this one vividly. First time seeing it I barely ate the whole week. I did manage to buy it on my own that summer from doing odd jobs around my apartment complex.

I have been playing all of the Super Mario Advance games in order. Yoshi's Island is by far the most difficult.
