Suppressed 13.9” Intermediate Gas System 5.56 Stays Winning 🏆

13.9” Intermediate 5.56 means short dwell time. Short dwell time means the gas port is farther away from the chamber and closer to the muzzle. Farther from the chamber means increased bolt lock time. Closer to the muzzle means the gas port is under pressure for less time.

Increased bolt lock time means reduced rate of fire in full auto. It also means there’s more time for gasses to escape the muzzle end of the gun rather than the chamber end when shooting suppressed. This means less gas to the face when shooting suppressed.

Gas port closer to muzzle means it’s less sensitive to changes in gas pressure and gas pressure duration. The differences between shooting suppressed v unsuppressed are lessened, requiring less dramatic tuning between them. Variations in ammo consistency also become less obvious.

These benefits are an inherent part of moving the gas port both further away from the chamber as well as closer to the muzzle. These benefits cannot be emulated with a gas port that is closer to the chamber and further away from the muzzle even if tuned.

Tuning always helps with optimization in any configuration, but choosing where you place your gas port is the foundation of how the rest of the firearm will operate.

The action will begin to cycle once the projectile passes the gas port. At the given point in the bullet’s travel down the barrel it passes the gas port determines WHEN the action begins to cycle. Closer gas port cycles sooner. Farther gas port cycles later.
