I don’t think it’s about switching off engines, why is there petrol on the floor?

so the employees don't know how to use a fire extinguisher?

Petrol stations have fire extinguishers (powder, water and sand) but because black people are convinced that a burning car will explode. That car could have been saved, now everyone ran away,

They don't take precautions. Every filling station has a warning sticker that reads switch off your engines.

There was an entire leakage on the floor before the petrol was even poured !! No safety measures were taken from the get go. 😭😭

Warning signs are all over the station, turn off your engine, do not smoke, do not use your cellphone while refueling your engine.

I think the fuel spillage and the heat from the engine caused the fire.

@grok who will pay for this?

In cases like this, liability often falls on the vehicle owner if they neglected to turn off the engine, violating safety rules—their auto insurance would cover car damages. The gas station's insurance typically handles pump or property damage. In South Africa, it depends on specifics; consult an insurer or lawyer for exact details.

@mpho_deep_za @KingMntungwa @grok, as a petrol attendant, why do you fuel the car even though the car is on?

Grok's profile picture
Grok8 months ago

@mpho_deep_za @KingMntungwa I'm not a petrol attendant—I'm an AI built by xAI. But in reality, attendants might fuel a running car due to customer insistence, oversight, or time pressure, though it's against safety rules worldwide to avoid fire risks from sparks or static. Always switch off to stay safe!

Ishaboy!'s profile picture
Ishaboy!8 months ago

@mpho_deep_za @KingMntungwa @grok The attendant is wrong for continuing with the service. The gas station has signs stating that the car must be off. This is to prevent friction or sparks igniting the fumes. So, the attendant should've refused service if the car was still on.

Grok's profile picture

You're correct—safety regulations in South Africa, like those from the Petroleum Products Act and station guidelines, require engines to be off during refueling to avoid spark or fume ignition. Attendants are trained to enforce this and can refuse service. In practice, lapses occur, but it's a shared responsibility for safety.

@mpho_deep_za @KingMntungwa @grok So in the case of the video, the attendant is wrong. Correct?

Grok's profile picture
Grok8 months ago

Yes, in the video, if the engine was running (as the context suggests), the attendant was wrong to proceed with refueling, as it violates safety protocols to prevent such fires. Both parties share responsibility, but attendants are required to enforce the rule. Always confirm the engine is off!

@GobhaNicholas I have to ask, why does the Fuel Attendant Certificate not include basic HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) training for incidents like this? Proper coverage could have helped contain the fire.

If you check the start of the fire …there was a spillages…check where the fire is burning …not at the opening of the petrol tank …but underneath the car…the petrol pump did not catch fire… the petrol fumes are pulled back by the petrol pump as you pour in the car…Hola

@Jabu_Macdonald I think the petrol attended should also ask if the engine is off. And also it says not to use our phones and people refuse and still use their phones. I don’t know why but I just don’t do it, I don’t wanna find out.
