Venom is metabolically expensive to produce (proteins, enzymes, peptides). It takes days to weeks to fully replenish venom glands after a big envenomation. When biting defensively, the snake often just wants you to go away, not to kill and eat you. A quick warning bite without venom is often sufficient and saves the snake its precious venom for actual prey. One thing we must know is that venom delivery is not automatic. The compressor muscles around the venom glands must contract to force venom through the fangs. The snake can choose: 1. No contraction → dry bite 2. Brief/light contraction → small dose 3. Full contraction → maximum envenomation Therefore, the snake can decide whether the animal it wants to bite deserves the venom or not, and how much venom it deserves.
