Following heavy clashes this morning in around Suwayda, between Druze-majority militias and the Bedouin/tribal militias in Southern Syria. The Syrian Interior Ministry has announced that internal security forces have begun to deploy into the countryside to the north and west of Suwayda, in order to enforce the ceasefire brokered last night by the United States and Damascus. Update: The Houran Bedouin tribes have inflicted heavy casualties on the Israeli-backed Druze militias, and captured several of their militiamen to exchange for the civilians kidnapped by the militias, and expelled them from two towns. (Soura al-Kubra, Talha) Reports say that mediation efforts are underway between the Druze militias and the Houran tribes to exchange captives and negotiate a ceasefire. What were the Druze militias thinking by attacking the Bedouins of Suwayda? Yes they are Sunnis, but Did they forget that their cousins, the Houran tribes, are more heavily armed than the Syrian government? Had it not been for mediation, the Israeli-backed militias would have been expelled from all of Suwayda. The Syrian government has no presence in Suwayda, and if the Druze militias continue harassing the Sunni Bedouins, next time the Syrian government might not be able to stop them. And if it tries, the tribes may even confront government forces themselves. especially if they come to see that the government prevents them from supporting their people and is not capable of confronting the Druze militias and restoring security in a province now run by Israeli-backed Druze militias.
