According to Syrian army sources, these tunnels were dug by Hezbollah and used to smuggle weapons, Captagon narcotics, and personnel. The tunnels come amid increased Hezbollah infiltration attempts and attacks on Syrian positions since the Israel-Lebanon war began. Even as Hezbollah fights Israel, it’s still busy running smuggling tunnels into Syria. The Syrian army is now reinforcing the border to crack down on it. He then said that there could be a role for Syria in Lebanon in the search for a security solution. The statement was interpreted as if Syrian forces would enter Lebanon the next morning, and that is not what was meant. From President Trump’s statement, the answer is that he was expressing frustration with what is happening in Lebanon and looking for other solutions, and that there could be a positive role for Syria through the Lebanese state and Lebanese institutions.
