We can’t understand President Trump’s possible response to Iran in the coming hours or days by looking at Iran alone. Iran is the crime scene but China is the audience. Trump cannot walk away from a massacre of this magnitude, morally or politically. Nor can he walk away when Beijing, Moscow, and Pyongyang are watching to see whether American words are backed by action. This moment isn’t only about Iran. It’s about deterrence about whether the United States still enforces red lines, or whether authoritarian regimes learn that mass repression carries no real cost.
