Takeaways from my recent trip to Australia. There's deep frustration with US foreign policy, but little appetite for Australia/its allies to decouple from the US. Instead, the hope is for the US to become a more predictable democratic ally again. Australians, do you agree?

I visit my family and friends in Australia every year, serm to be aligned with Canada and the EU. They want to distance themselves from the US. After today’s EU invitation for Canada to become an associate member of the EU, Australia’s Trade Minister “ we are on the same page as Canada”

Was in Australia a few months back and when Trump’s name came up people either laughed or got angry The biggest challenge for the rest of the world trusting America again is you could vote an even bigger fuckwit in again

Sadly Trump has offended or abused most of America’s traditional allies. They don’t feel they can rely on the Trump administration as a stable and trusted military or business ally. Ironically Trump is pushing his historic allies towards new trade agreements with India, China etc

My sister lives in Tasmania. She says Australians have the same attitude towards Trump as Canadians. He is considered a laughing stock; an ignorant unaware lying buffoon. Neither Canadians nor Australians are anti- American but they cannot fathom how Americans voted him in TWICE!

Amb, not sure you’re getting a full picture of Australia from one major city or from inside the intellectual bubble. The country is in a period of decline. Australia has recorded one of the sharpest post-pandemic falls in living standards in the OECD. Real wages are down about 5% since early 2021 among the steepest declines in the developed world, and real household income per person has grown far more slowly than the OECD average. Falling house prices and flatlining living standards are now shifting voting intentions toward the far right lunatics. Australia should be a global leader in business and prosperity, rich in resources, talent, institutions and location. Instead, the welfare burden, cost blowouts, green left dogma and capital allocation to the least productive sectors have turned government spending into a noose around the economy. The result is persistent inflation and no productivity growth. As for @POTUS , his foreign policy and agenda for America 🇺🇸 makes total sense in this context I’ve articulated previously below👇

No,even without Trump we want to decouple. We don’t want Aus to be caught in the middle between a rising China and the US and its tendency to start wars.We have long known that the US is only our “ally” as long as we do whatever they want with no pushback, and we’re tired of that

A lot of Australians would like the US to stop voting for people like Trump. American influence internationally has great consequences outside of the USA.

"predictable?" you are already PREDICTABLE .... you are predicably IRRATIONAL CORRUPT, VIOLENT AND ARROGANT .... getting rid of Donald is not the solution, not after you elected him TWICE and have been TOTALLY INCAPABLE of dealing with him during this nightmare .... your ineffective whining while he runs rampant puts the lie to your claims of being the "land of the FREE and the home of the BRAVE" .. you are neither, despite your hubris

Australia and the Australian people need to turn their backs on this United States. Until trump and his miscreant administration is GONE ALL righteous governments should do the same. #ShunTheUS

All I know is that if we go to war with Canada, we’ll have the whole commonwealth up our ass. And the Aussies will bring their entire menagerie of deadly animals.

I think this is the sense of all I saw that was the feeling I read from Asia Society in Sydney Australia. They want America to be America again and be apart of the Mix but that does not mean they can't be the judge of what is fair for all themself.

The takeaway from McFaul's words: allies don't want a break with the U.S. even when they're unhappy with its policies. Which means the U.S. can pretty much do whatever it wants in foreign policy without worrying about losing allies.

While it's not technically an empire, more like a U.S. commonwealth, it's real and it's the best we've got. Trump is definitely stress testing it though.

We are predictably and reliable, we are more predictably and reliable than any nation. We have laws that back up our agreements and protect those we trade with. Stop letting Americans get ripped off and stand up or move.

A maritime order is pretty inescapably necessary. The question is how we get to there. What are options and what are obligations and how we make it all make sense.
