If the Wolves were able to have a cap space team (maybe Brooklyn or Chicago) absorb Julius Randle's contract next season ($33M), that would open up three interesting roster building tools I want to highlight. I think this is relevant because the Wolves front office has a history of kind of stringing together transactions -- even over the course of multiple transaction windows (offseason and trade deadline). The Randle trade would be Randle + draft compensation for say Brooklyn to absorb the contract - maybe: Randle + No. 28 for a future 2nd (Adjust compensation as you see fit. Not the point of this exercise. Obviously if this would cost a bunch, they wouldn't do it. Or maybe they'd have to move to using Gobert's salary as the salary moved into another team's cap space.) Shedding Randle's salary would drop the Wolves well below the *1st* apron (about $52M). And while beneath the 1st apron, the Wolves would open up the ability to three additional roster building tools for spending that $52M... (If Ayo Dosunmu were to sign for $17M, that would be $35M in room below the 1st apron. And need to make sure to get the roster to 14 players.) 1. The non-taxpayer midlevel exception ($15M) - The "big MLE" is a $15M gift card for teams to spend above the salary cap but below the 1st apron. So if the Wolves were to use this, they would be hard-capped at the 1st apron ($13M below 2nd apron). If a team is over the 1st apron, they only have access to the taxpayer or "mini MLE", which is $6M next season - Could go out and sign a free agent for up to $15M in starting salary - Could also use this $15M as a trade exception and trade for a player who makes up to $15M 2. The trade exception generated in the Mike Conley salary dump trade to Chicago ($10.77M) - A trade exception allows a team to trade for a player without sending back matching salary for up to the amount of the trade exception - So with access to this trade exception, the Wolves could trade for a player making up to $10.77M - Using a trade exception also hard caps a team at the 1st apron ($13M below 2nd apron) 3. Making a Randle trade to a team who absorbs his contract into cap space would also create another trade exception (up to $33M) - The size of that trade exception would be Randle's $33M, minus whatever the Wolves took back in the trade - Might not need that for spending this summer. But doesn't expire for 365 days. The downside of working below the 1st apron as opposed to the 2nd apron is it restricts overall spending power by $13M -- because that's the gap between the two aprons.

With the Wolves getting knocked out by Oklahoma City and San Antonio these last two seasons, asked Naz Reid about what they need to do to be able to catch those teams. "Probably just the moodiness. You look at both of those teams and they're playing for one another, they're excited to be on the floor with one another, they're a team where they're selfless... I think we have more than enough talent... But just being less moody. I think that's just the name of the game for us, just being less moody and more selfless."

I like Kyle Theige's idea here about prioritizing roster flexibility over roster continuity. But I do wonder how much the Wolves' floor -- on both offense and defense -- disappears if *both* Randle and Gobert are not on the team next season. Some floor-raiser numbers on Randle and Gobert from this season... Wolves halfcourt offense was 8.6 points per 100 possessions better with Randle on the floor - Randle ON: 101.3 - Randle OFF: 92.7 - Randle ON, Edwards OFF: 99.9 - Edwards ON, Randle OFF: 95.8 Wolves halfcourt defense was 10.3 points per 100 possessions better with Gobert on the floor - Gobert ON: 91.3 - Gobert OFF: 101.6 - Gobert ON, Edwards OFF: 88.1 - Edwards ON, Gobert OFF: 105.7 League-average for halfcourt offensive/defensive rating was 98.1 during the 25-26 season. Meaning: Relative to league-average, the offense was awful when Randle sat and defense was awful when Gobert sat. Edwards may be the Wolves' best player, but Randle and Gobert have clearly been the Wolves' stabilizers.

I think the most important variable to the Wolves' offseason puzzle is what Julius Randle or what Rudy Gobert could be traded for. That information feels like a pre-requisite to any meaningful deal. Because any big trade, including the Giannis one we go through below, all but requires that one of Randle or Gobert are involved in the trade, or moved in a subsequent trade. And I think a big complicating factor in the Wolves pursuit of Giannis specifically is that Giannis is likely the first domino of the offseason -- with everything else coming after that. Meaning: The trade market for Randle and Gobert should become a lot clearer *after* the Giannis decision is made. Is it possible to have that all mapped out? It's not impossible. The word I've been using going back to the trade deadline is complicated -- very complicated. I would guess the ultimate Giannis trade, if the Wolves were involved, would feel like two or three big deals wrapped up into one 4- or 5-team trade.

Both Jabari and Tari talked about the chemistry they have built over the years, and how they went from rebuilding years to playing in playoff games. I asked Alperen Sengun what it means to him to go from winning 17-20 games to playing in the playoffs alongside other young players like Tari and Jabari. “Playing with them is really appreciated it growing up together we have seen the worse I mean I have seen the worse being the worse team in the league and coming out here in 3 years is a big thing for us.”

To me, it's an unserious roster right now -- no bigs outside of Gobert and Beringer. If they roll into the season with this group, it will be spun as "unconventional" or "where the game is moving" or "loading...". But in reality, it would just be unserious for a team with title aspirations to have the starting power forward be Ayo Dosunmu (a PG last year) or Trey Lyles (not in the NBA last year). Could be fun. Wouldn't be serious. However... if they do trade some combination of Green/DiVincenzo/Shannon for a legitimate 4, then I think it's fair to say the Wolves have improved as much as anyone in the West this summer. And that's with no LeBron.

Again, I think a bit of a group think there obviously by definition it can’t be successful for all the teams that were engaging in that strategy. But on the other hand the analytics which all the sports are using today suggest that it’s a potentially a winning strategy and that is to race to the bottom in order to get higher draft picks. I think it was a bit of perfect storm this year. You have a perception of a very deep draft class, which it appears to be some great players coming into the league. And then even fans in particular cities and even media in those cities to a certain degree were rooting for their teams to tank and saying, you know, how well can your team be managed if you’re sort of just in the middle? You either got to be great or you got to let yourself get bad. As frustrated as Rudy Gobert has been about the Wolves' effort this season. He also said the accountability is not there. "There's just no effort. We've seen that many, many times this year, last few years since I've been here. We always know it's coming, and when it comes there's no sense of urgency. No accountability. So I think at some point, if the players don't have accountability, someone else gotta have accountability for the players. I'm just talking straight effort."

q: if jeno were an F1 driver, would he want jaemin on the same team or the opposite team? 🐶: i think being on opposite teams would be better. if we were on the same team, it’d probably be exhausting. i think it’d be hard to decide who gets first-driver status. 🐱: i’ve been getting more interested in F1 lately and have been watching bits of it, but i still don’t know that much about it. i feel like if jeno and i were on the same team, we’d probably spend the whole race messing with each other.
