Many cars at the Port of Dar es Salaam were burnt to ashes the day before yesterday and yesterday as Tanzanian protesters targeted businesses, companies, and petrol stations owned by political elites from the Chama Cha Mapinduzi ruling party. The Port of Dar es Salaam serves as a key gateway not only for Tanzania but also for several landlocked neighbouring countries such as Zimbabwe, Malawi, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, the DRC, and Zambia. Sadly, about 70 percent of the cars that were destroyed belonged to Zimbabweans, and most of them were not insured, according to a port official who sent this video to me. The official added that some of the cars that were insured belonged to citizens of the DRC, but almost all vehicles destined for Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Zambia were uninsured. Most of the cars were parked at petrol stations around the port, which is a common practice among freight companies because petrol stations are generally considered safe. However, many of these stations in Tanzania are owned by the son of former President Jakaya Kikwete, and they were targeted by protesters for that reason, resulting in the cars becoming collateral damage. One of the buildings you see in this video belongs to Chama Cha Mapinduzi, the ruling party of Tanzania. It was also targeted, which further exposed the nearby cars to destruction.

The woman at the window recording, ended up posting it on Facebook and the McDonald’s worker caught allot of backlash for the video because allot of context was missing. This happened on New Years Eve, that location was going to be closed at 8pm for the holiday, they ran out of food and stopped taking orders at 7:30 for that reason. At that point the Karen could have canceled her order in the app but refused because she felt it was unreasonable that the restaurant was closing early and ran out, she didn’t care that they couldn’t serve her what they didn’t have. So now knowing the full picture, should the McDonald’s worker still have been fired?

The new connection is expected to accelerate cargo movement by up to 80% compared to transit timelines currently experienced across competing regional trade corridors. The country’s long-term logistics strategy aims to position Dar es Salaam as the fastest and most efficient maritime gateway in East and Central Africa. By 2028, the SGR line is expected to extend to Isaka Dry Port in Shinyanga, while full rail connectivity to the borders of Rwanda and Burundi is targeted by 2030. Once completed, Tanzania intends for transit cargo moving through Dar Port to reach destinations across the East African Community (EAC) corridor in less than 48 hours. The transformation follows more than $1 Billion in modernization and expansion investments at Dar es Salaam Port led by DP World. As a result, annual cargo throughput capacity has now increased from a minimum of 27.7 million tonnes toward a projected 50 million tonnes. Performance figures for the 2025/26 financial year already indicate strong growth momentum across the port ecosystem.
