Muslim homes torched in Nepal A Hindutva mob carried out a pogrom against Muslims in the Sunsari district, southeastern Nepal, with homes, businesses and mosques set on fire as the violence later spread to neighbouring Siraha district. Families were forced to flee as entire neighbourhoods came under attack, prompting authorities to impose indefinite curfews and deploy security forces across the affected areas. A dispute over loud music and religious flags during a Hindu procession near a Muslim area was the trigger for the violence. But growing Hindutva radicalisation and the rapid spread of social media misinformation and inflammatory content are the deeper causes. Nepal is an overwhelmingly Hindu nation with a small Muslim minority (5%).
