I get irritated by this supply and demand nonsense because it sounds sensible until you actually look at how the economy works. Firms do not set prices by some neat textbook equilibrium, and the real world is a lot messier than neoclassical economists admit. Grateful for the questions and insights from Griffith University students at the economics and public policy roundtable hosted by the business school this week. It was a welcome opportunity to talk about housing and tax reform, Australia’s place in a world of churn and change, and their role in shaping the future. I really valued my time as a student at Griffith and always enjoy going back to spend time with the next generation.

Price controls are Communism 101 but they "sound good" to the economic illiterate. Price controls are one of the oldest economic polices ever tried. They have always been a failure. The Roman emperor Diocletian, more than 1700 years ago, tried to stop inflation by imposing price controls. He failed. The French Revolutionaries, the same people who executed thousands with the guillotine, used the Law of Maximums to cap food prices. They failed, and the result was widespread famine. The Soviet system used price controls throughout its history. The result, every time, was long lines, shortages and low quality. There are only two interpretations of the Kamala campaign's decision to promise price controls on food. Either 1. They genuinely think that grocery stores, famously one of the lowest-margin, mostly highly-competitive businesses in America, suddenly became "greedier" in 2021 and colluded to hike prices, all at the same time and all in the same way. Or 2. They know "price gouging" has nothing to do with higher food prices, but think they can scam the public by blaming the worst inflation in decades on "greedy corporations." In other words, they either don't grasp basic economics and are incompetent, or they DO grasp basic economics, but are willing to wreck the economy to win political power. Kamala Harris along with Joe Biden created and enflamed inflation, and now they say they can "fix it" by destroying the free market principles which made America the economic powerhouse it is. WAKE UP, AMERICA!!

Most of the Treasury rejection narrative stems from a deep misunderstanding of curves, interest rates, and basic economics. The thing is, it sounds like it SHOULD happen. The government is broke, the debt problem is getting worse, but you need to understand that ***isn’t*** a problem for the Treasury ***market***. It's a massive problem for you and me, the bigger the government gets. It’s a huge problem for the economy, because the more Treasury borrows and Uncle Sam spends the worse the economy performs (govt is waste and inefficiency, at best). And perversely, the more the government fails at economics, the more demand there will be for Treasury assets. Again, this isn’t the way we want it to go, but you have to accept this is how the market and the monetary world works. Treasury supply doesn’t matter and we have years, decades of proof showing you this. 2025 is another perfect example especially since everyone said this was going to be the year Treasury supply did matter. Spoiler alert: nope, it didn’t. The reason is depression economics and that’s the one key matter no one ever considers because they stupidly listen to the Fed and mainstream Economics when both are upside down and backwards on reality.
