This is a topic I feel strongly about. After I retired from the military I became an elementary school teacher. 4th and 5th grade. 28 years. The single most important thing for parents to know is that rote memorization of the multiplication tables is the single most important skill for a student to have. I never had a SINGLE student who had this down pat struggle with math. It is THE essential skill for moving into division, fractions and percentages. Even as far back as the early 60s memorization in math has had a bad name.

When my oldest was in 3rd grade I reached out to my math teacher on Facebook for help. He explained it and told me to watch Khan Academy on YouTube.

I remember way back in the early 60s in fourth grade having to learn "New Math". A crackpot teaching strategy all the rage at the time. When my father tried to help me out while sitting at the dining room table, he would break pencils in half he'd get so mad. And he was a businessman and college grad! Always hated math after that. Until I got to Field Artillery Officers School and became a math genius...

I spent almost 6 hours on a weekend a few months ago helping my son with multiplying squares and cubes, and square and cube roots. I posted about it. But it’s like they don’t “teach” anything anymore. 🤔

New Math that they started teaching years ago is confusing. < > .. Unless you want to work in something that requires it. But Kids had to bend a knee for this.
