“Teardrops” is from Womack & Womack’s 1988 album Conscience. Written by husband-and-wife duo Cecil Womack and Linda Womack, the soulful R&B track became their signature song and a major international hit, reaching #3 on the UK Singles Chart and #1 in the Netherlands, as well as topping the charts... in Australia and Belgium. Its infectious groove and smooth production helped make it one of the defining soul-pop songs of the late 1980s. The song was not a major hit in the US, but its success across Europe and other international markets established Womack & Womack as a major act outside their home country. It also highlighted the couple's songwriting talents, continuing a family tradition that included Cecil's earlier work with The Valentinos and Linda's connection to the legendary Sam Cooke family. “Teardrops” has since endured as the duo's best-known recording and one of the most recognizable soul hits of the late 1980s.show more

“A Little Respect” is from Erasure’s 1988 album The Innocents. Written by Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, the synth-pop classic became one of the duo's signature songs, reaching #4 on the UK Singles Chart and becoming their second Top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at #14. Its infectious melody, emotional lyrics and instantly recognizable chorus helped establish The Innocents as Erasure's commercial breakthrough. The track's soaring vocal performance, combined with Vince Clarke's sophisticated electronic production, created one of the defining songs of late-1980s synth-pop. Decades later the song experienced a renewed surge in popularity after the cast of the hit TV series Scrubs performed an impromptu singalong in a memorable 2002 episode, introducing “A Little Respect” to a new generation of listeners and reinforcing its place as one of Erasure's most enduring songs.

“Head Over Heels” was the fourth single released in the UK from Tears for Fears' 1985 album Songs from the Big Chair, and the third single from the album in the United States. The song became one of the band's biggest American hits, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, while peaking at No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart. Its lush production and romantic lyrics helped make it one of Tears for Fears' most enduring songs of the 1980s. Years later, “Head Over Heels” became inseparable from the iconic school-hallway sequence in Richard Kelly's 2001 film Donnie Darko. Kelly had the song in mind while writing the scene and choreographed the entire sequence around it, using long Steadicam shots and slow motion to introduce the film's major characters as the students and teachers move through the halls. In fact, the sequence was filmed before the production had secured the final rights to the song, a major gamble that ultimately paid off.

“Chiquitita” was written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus for ABBA's 1979 album Voulez-Vous. While developing the song, the duo deliberately gave it a Latin-flavoured feel, with “El Cóndor Pasa,” popularised internationally by Simon & Garfunkel serving as one of their points of reference. The result was a gentle and uplifting song that stood out among the more disco-oriented material on the album. Released as a single in January 1979, “Chiquitita” became one of ABBA's biggest international hits, reaching No. 1 in 10 countries and No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart. Its success in Spanish-speaking markets led ABBA to record a Spanish-language version, with lyrics adapted by Buddy and Mary McCluskey of RCA Records Argentina. Recorded in March 1979, the Spanish version became a major hit across Latin America and Spain and helped inspire ABBA to record their 1980 Spanish-language album Gracias por la Música.

"Shaddap You Face" began as a joke. Australian singer Joe Dolce wrote the song while developing a comedic Italian-Australian character named Giuseppe, combining an exaggerated accent with humorous observations about family expectations and generational conflicts. What started as a novelty performance quickly evolved into one of the most unexpected international hits of the early 1980s. Released in 1980, the song became a worldwide phenomenon, reaching No. 1 in Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, New Zealand, Ireland, and Belgium. It sold millions of copies worldwide and became Australia's best-selling single at the time. The song is also famous for preventing Vienna by Ultravox from reaching No. 1 in the UK, creating one of the most debated chart battles in British pop history and turning the rivalry into a lasting symbol of the debate between "serious" music and novelty pop.

“Back in Black” was written by Angus Young, Malcolm Young and Brian Johnson as a tribute to AC/DC's former lead singer Bon Scott, who died in February 1980. Rather than creating a mournful song, the band wanted to celebrate Scott's life with something powerful and triumphant. The track became the title song of AC/DC's seventh studio album, produced by Robert John “Mutt” Lange and released later that year. Although “Back in Black” was not initially a major singles-chart hit in the US, the album became a monumental commercial success and eventually one of the best-selling albums in music history. The title track has since become one of AC/DC's most recognisable songs and one of the defining anthems ofrock. Malcolm Young originally used the famous opening guitar riff as a warm-up exercise before it evolved into the foundation of the song.

“Voyage, Voyage” is the biggest hit by French singer Desireless (Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop). Written by Jean-Michel Rivat and Dominique Dubois and released in 1986, the atmospheric synth-pop song became an unexpected international phenomenon despite being sung entirely in French. It reached No. 1 in Germany, Austria, Norway and Spain, while peaking at No. 2 in France, where it remained there for four weeks. Its dramatic vocals, electronic production and mysterious atmosphere made it one of the defining European synth-pop hits of the 1980s. Desireless was relatively unknown before “Voyage, Voyage,” and she never matched the song's enormous international success. In the UK the original recording reached No. 53 in 1987, while a 1988 remix climbed to No. 5. Despite becoming a major hit across Europe, the song did not enter the US Billboard charts. The music video, directed by photographer Bettina Rheims, features American actor David Caruso, who was still at the beginning of his acting career at the time.
