『METAL SLUG 3』に登場するマルクス大統領です。こういった演出キャラは、思いついた時に描くので、スケジュール上で作業時間を確保してるわけではありません。忙しいさなかに… 「あ、良い小ネタ思いついた！」頭に絵が浮かんでしまったら仕方がありません。現行の仕事をなんとか前倒しで仕上げ、そこから小ネタに取り組む時間をひねり出すのですが、これがもう大変…。ゲームに絶対必要というわけでもないキャラに時間を割く余裕なんて無いのに、思いついてしまったら、もう描きたくて我慢できないんです。その結果、小ネタを描きたすぎて、ゲーム上で重要なキャラをちょっと手抜きしてしまうこともしばしば。軟禁生活が続く中で、こうした小ネタを描くのは本当に楽しくて、いつまでも描いていたい気持ちでした。スタッフのみんなに笑ってもらえるような長尺の小芝居を仕込むのも好きで、こっそり入れては楽しんでいたんです。今見ると少し荒いアニメですが、あの過酷なスケジュールの中でここまで無駄に動かしていた自分を、今ではちょっと褒めてあげたくなります。ただ当時、ロケテストでは誰にもこの大統領を見てもらえなかったのが、少し寂しかったですね。あわよくば、プレイ中にSPがテレポートして現れるところに気を取られて、敵弾に当たってコンティニューしてもらえないかな…なんて思っていました。いつもそこにいるのに、誰にも気づいてもらえない…。ある意味、イースターエッグ的な小ネタとなったのが、このマルクス大統領でした。 Here is President Marx from METAL SLUG 3. In the middle of a busy day… “Oh, I just came up with a great little gag!” Once the image popped into my head, there was no stopping it. I would try to finish my current tasks ahead of time just to squeeze out a little room to work on the gag, and that alone was already a real struggle. Even though there was never really any room to spend time on characters that weren’t essential to the game, once an idea came to me, I just couldn’t hold back from drawing it. As a result, I often ended up putting too much effort into these little gags and cutting corners here and there on the more important characters. During those long days of being practically locked up at work, creating these little gags was truly fun for me, and I always felt like I could just keep drawing them forever. I especially enjoyed slipping in longer skits that would make the staff laugh, and I had fun secretly adding them into the game. Looking at it now, the animation feels a little rough, but considering how harsh the schedule was back then, I almost want to praise myself for making him move around so unnecessarily. What made me a little sad back then was that during the location test, nobody ever seemed to notice this president at all. If I was lucky, I hoped that players might get distracted by the SPs teleporting in, take a hit from enemy fire, and end up continuing because of it.
