Former champion Tyson defeated Ruddock by technical knockout in the seventh round, but the manner in which the fight was stopped nearly sparked a riot, leading to a rematch being signed to resolve the dispute.

The champion, dancing in the fifth, taunted Lyle with jabs but often found himself trapped against the ropes. In June 1983, Roberto Durán faced Davey Moore at Madison Square Garden for the WBA super welterweight championship! By the fourth round, Moore's eye was swollen shut and his nose was bleeding. Late in the seventh round, Durán knocked Moore down, leaving him so stunned that he walked to the wrong corner at the end of the round. During the eighth round, Moore's trainer, Leon Washington, threw a bloody white towel into the ring to signal surrender, but referee Ernesto Magaña ignored it. Top Rank executive Jay Edison then stepped into the ring, prompting the stoppage of the fight and resulting in Durán being declared the winner by technical knockout!
