As a man under 40, I feel bombarded by gambling ads. That is not an accident. Ontario legalized private online gambling in 2022, and in Doug Ford’s booze-and-bets economy, it has become a sad crutch. The result is everywhere: gambling spend has doubled, ad spending has nearly quintupled, 50+ private operators are competing for our attention, and during sports broadcasts, more than 20% of the time you’re watching, you’re looking at gambling branding. I don’t think gambling should be illegal. But we learned this lesson with smoking. A product can be legal without allowing companies to target people’s addictions for profit. So why are we letting gambling companies do it?
