💔 Teddy Johnson: Prime Minister indicates degenerative condition that 'stole a seven-year-old boy’s smile' could be added to the heel prick test 🗣DUP MP Carla Lockhart MP raising the matter in the House of Commons. Teddy Johnson, from Northern Ireland, died after suffering from metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD), which can... affect the brain and cause the loss of physical and mental skills. The disease can be treated if it is detected early enough, but the national body for screening recommended against it being added to the heel prick test for infants, which is used to identify rare conditions. Democratic Unionist Party MP for Upper Bann, Carla Lockhart, urged Sir Keir Starmer to step in and reconsider adding it to the test during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday. Ms Lockhart had previously raised the condition in the House of Commons before Teddy’s death. She told MPs he died last week. She said: “MLD is a horrendous condition that stole Teddy’s ability to walk, talk and even smile. “What makes this tragedy more profound is that here in the UK we have a treatment, we have a cure, but it’s only effective if the condition is identified by the simple heel prick at birth and treated immediately, because when symptoms appear, it’s too late.” She said: “Just a few weeks ago, the UK screening committee recommended it remain excluded from the heel prick. So we have a treatment, we have a commissioned service in Manchester Royal Children’s Hospital, but children like Teddy are still dying prematurely. “Prime Minister, despite all that’s going on the world, I know he is in politics to make a change – in Teddy’s memory and the memory of all those who have died prematurely, make the change and add MLD to the simple heel prick.” Sir Keir said: “I’m very saddened to hear of his passing, and I think my thoughts and I’m sure of the whole House are with his family, and his loved ones, and I will do precisely as she asks, I’ll make sure that we look at this again in light of the information she has now given to me in the course of this session.”show more

Today the Prime Minister spoke for over 2 hours in the House of Commons about the American attack on Iran. While I have no sympathy with the Iranian regime, I do not believe that on and of itself is a reason for militarily intervention. I am glad our prime minister has confirmed that we declined to take part in the action of the US government (something Reform and Conservative MPs said they would have supported). We live in a volatile world and I fear this weekend has made it more so.

Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni said that it is not possible to have just, lasting peace in Ukraine unless Kyiv gets guarantees that it will not be invaded again by Russia. She sees NATO as the best such guarantee. In the Commons last week, Zarah Sultana MP used parliamentary privilege to expose a court order that restricts reporting on certain aspects of a live criminal case, withholding important information from both jurors and the British public. But neither Novara nor any other British media outlet can safely report or play the contents of what she said. On Wednesday night’s Novara Live, the Your Party MP joined host Steven Methven to discuss what she described as an “insane” attack “on all of our civil liberties". “The fact that only Parliament TV, only Hansard, can report on it tells you what the British state is all about - and it is about curtailing our rights to organise, to resist, to challenge when the state overreaches,” she said. “I think it is scary.” Parliamentary privilege protects Sultana from prosecution for what she said in the chamber, but breaching the order outside of the House of Commons could be considered contempt of court, carrying a maximum two-year prison sentence. “I was surprised to learn that the British media has no absolute right to report on what MPs say in our own parliament,” Methven said on the show. “I’m scared that a lot of people don’t even know what’s happening,” Sultana replied. “The fact that American organisations and non-UK organisations are the only ones reporting on this is scary. How do we organise against this? And how do we fight back?” While he did not reveal the contents of Sultana’s 14 April speech, which can still be viewed online in the Parliament TV archive, Methven said that her statement was connected to very general issues relating to jury trials and the government’s current attack on them, as well as counter-terror law. Sultana said she found the court order frightening. In October, alongside a number of MP colleagues, I asked Justin Trudeau to step down and begin a process to elect a new leader of the Liberal Party. When he declined to do so, I was one of a number of MPs who publicly called for a secret ballot vote in caucus on the question of whether Justin Trudeau should lead us into the next election. The Prime Minister has not responded to that request. Recently I have publicly repeated my calls for him to step down. It pains me to do this. In light of the names Anneke Lucas mentioned, like the former Canadian prime minister who is dead now, but is the father of the current one. It is being shared all over the internet now.
