Today I went through every 3-2 pitch Juan Soto saw in the 2025 season. Three things stuck out: 1️⃣ He Doesn’t Expand - he has some of the best strike zone awareness of anyone in the game. When he gets to two strikes, he does not chase or expand the zone. Most players start swinging at pitcher’s pitches. He makes pitchers execute a quality pitch to get him out. 2️⃣ He Competes! -he takes great pride in being a tough out. He battles. He doesn’t give in. He finds a way to get on base. 3️⃣ His Approach - because he’s so willing to use the entire field, his two strike approach does not need to change much. Sometimes I sit down and ask myself: what kind of metal was used to make Dr. Kizza Besigye? Here is a man who is financially secure, with investments, highly educated, a retired military officer, and married to an internationally respected wife. He has a family and every reason to choose a quiet life, yet he has never surrendered or stopped fighting for what he believes is the liberation of Uganda. From the day he declared that he would challenge his former friend for the presidency in 2001, he has faced countless political battles. He has survived death threats, rape allegations, repeated arrests, the loss of family members, and the loss of close friends in the struggle. Through it all, he has never given up. Truth be told, I even fear his level of resilience. What many people dismissed as “just another arrest” has, over nearly two years, turned into a life-threatening ordeal. Yet every time he appears before a judge, he still carries himself with remarkable courage. Looking at his actions, one gets the impression that he would rather lose his life than surrender his principles. Whether one agrees with his politics or not, very few people could endure what Dr. Besigye has endured. Many people, when faced with such pressure, would plead guilty for a lighter sentence or negotiate with those responsible for their arrest. He has chosen a different path. Personally, I know I would have surrendered long ago. We may never see another Besigye in our lifetime. People can debate his politics, but his endurance, conviction and willingness to sacrifice for what he believes are qualities that are undeniably rare. Carlos Estévez on why Shohei Ohtani is an Android built on discipline and raw talent; (Written and translated by Master Flip) He’s a robot. Straight up, that guy’s a robot. He’s in a league of his own. His routine, the way he prepares from the moment he steps on the field, the discipline it takes to be ready for a 2 p.m. first pitch, it’s not easy. But that discipline is incredible. And it’s where the whole talent vs. hard work debate gets real. I’m a firm believer in hard work. I’m the kind of guy who was made through grind, I don’t have natural gifts like that. I’ve always said hard work beats talent when talent slacks off. But Ohtani? He’s the rare combination of both. That’s how you end up with an Android. As a hitter, he barely needs BP on the field. He heads straight to the cage, does a drill going the other way, and that’s it. Hitting is hard, everyone knows it, but this guy does minimal tuning and still turns into a beast at the plate. Pitching, though? That’s where he puts in the real work. He comes out, throws weighted balls, drills his mechanics, grinds on every detail. Maybe it’s because pitching is the side where he’s humanely made, but he’s naturally a hitter, that’s the way I see it. Either way, his ability is unreal. One time, he made an out against Michael King’s sinker and immediately asked, “What was that? A sinker? How do you grip it?” The very next day in the bullpen, he’s out there throwing sinkers. The day before he pitches, he’ll throw maybe 10–15 pitches in the pen. Then, three pitches into his start the next day, boom, a sinker! I’m sitting there thinking, How?! I’ve spent a thousand years trying to perfect a nasty slider, and he just picks up something new and drops it in game like it’s nothing. The lifestyle that level of player lives is tough. Guys like Trout are the same way, they have to stay low key because everyone knows them. At the ’23 All-Star Game, I flew with Ohtani, hung out with him the whole time until we got to the hotel. Once we arrived, it was straight to the back entrance for him, different access. I just said, goodbye Charlie, I’ll see you later, and went off with the regular mortals. But we bonded over the little things. I play video games, watch anime and read manga, he does too. That’s how we became close. This year at the All Star Game, he was repping the NL and I was on the AL side. He waited for me. My oldest daughter yelled “Ohtani!” and he recognized her right away, so he held up just to talk to me. That’s who he is, he’s a superstar among superstars. Beethoven could not hear the music he wrote. At the age of 28, he realized he was no longer able to listen to a flute being played in the distance, and he spent the rest of his life composing the most enduring music in Western history in almost complete silence... He had been a working musician since childhood. His ears were everything. In 1798, in the middle of a heated argument with a singer, he noticed for the first time that something was wrong. The sound was thinning at the edges. He could hear voices, but high frequencies were beginning to disappear. He told no one for years. By 1802, the truth was no longer deniable. On his doctor's advice he moved to Heiligenstadt, a quiet village outside Vienna, hoping the country air would help. It did not. There, alone and surrounded by farmland, he wrote a letter to his two brothers that he never sent. It was found among his papers after his death. We now call it the Heiligenstadt Testament, and it is one of the most devastating documents ever written by an artist about himself: "You men who think or say that I am malevolent, stubborn or misanthropic, how greatly do you wrong me. You do not know the cause of my seeming so... what a humiliation, when one stood beside me and heard a flute in the distance and I heard nothing, or someone heard the shepherd singing, and again I heard nothing." He wrote, in the same letter, that he had thought of ending his life. And then he wrote the line that explains everything that followed: "Only my art held me back. It seemed impossible to me to leave the world before I had produced everything I felt called upon to produce." He went back to Vienna. He went on composing. Over the next two decades his hearing continued to fade. Friends began writing their words down in small notebooks instead of speaking them aloud, and waiting while he read. Modern scholars call these the conversation books. Around four hundred of them survive. To compose, he developed his own methods. He bit one end of a wooden rod and pressed the other against the soundboard of his piano, letting the vibrations travel through his jaw to his inner ear. He had stumbled, through trial and error, onto the principle that modern science calls bone conduction. The cause of his deafness has never been settled. What we do know is this: he realized he was losing his hearing at twenty-eight, and he could have stopped. He wrote the letter, he held the thought of dying in his hand, and then he put down the pen and went back to work. Most of what he is remembered for was composed after that moment: The Fifth Symphony. The Seventh. The Ninth. The Missa Solemnis. The late quartets. All of it was made by a man who could no longer hear most of what he was writing. There are people who give the world what they receive, and there are people who give the world what they were never able to receive. I would give up the most to get Mason Miller. I think he is awesome, first of all. Two, he is young and he is under team control. You get Mason Miller for four more years on top on what he has...So he can be the long term closer and I think his stuff is on just a different level. Now, you look at some of his [2025] numbers and his [4.04] ERA, it's not what you want it to be. He had one bad outing in April that has kind of thrown off his whole season, other than that he has dominated."
