The roof is already on the house. That’s when the homeowner decided payment had to wait. Materials went on a Home Depot credit card. The store refund of extra materials takes 2–3 business days. Contractor has the receipt. Work is done. Cash is still being held over a refund that has nothing to do with him. He normally takes 50% up front and buys the material himself. Homeowner wanted to run it through Home Depot instead. That was the homeowner’s choice. It does not become the contractor’s problem after the shingles are nailed down. Contractor: “You didn’t pay me. That’s why I’m recording.” Then: pay today or it’s 10% a day and a lien. “Stop the recording, please” is not a payment plan. If you finish the job and still have to argue over a Home Depot refund timeline, you record. Every time. Am I missing something, or is this homeowner trying to get a free roof? Contractors who’ve been stiffed — is this over the line, or is this just Tuesday? How do you handle this situation?
