Tesla can be behind on its FSD goals and still be making solid progress. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive. Jeff Lutz 🔋 thinks the hardware is mostly there. The real challenge now is software, cleaning up edge cases, improving the models, and seeing what the v15 architecture unlocks. Robotaxi miles also appear to be doubling every 5–8 weeks, while Tesla keeps deploying more hardware. Anyone that has tried the latest Tesla FSD knows it’s starting to feel like a living creature. It’s clear that Elon is actually worried about putting so much intelligence in a Tesla bc it feels it can get bored. “Have you tried Tesla self-driving lately? The car, it just increasingly feels sentient. It feels like a living creature. And that’ll only get more so… I’m actually thinking we probably shouldn’t put so much intelligence into the car because it might get bored. Imagine you’re stuck in a car and that’s all you could do. You don’t put Einstein in a car. It’s like why am I stuck in a car? So there’s actually probably a limit to how much intelligence you put in a car to not have the intelligence be bored.”

FSD slams on the brakes for a cat in the road that doesn’t even exist. This is FSD 12.6.4 on HW3, which is a lot more sensitive to shadows & objects in the road with the 2026.8.6 update. There are many reports of brake stabbing. It brings me back to the days when I was testing with v10.3 of FSD back in 2021. It’s interesting that it’s the same FSD version as before, and not something like 12.6.4.1, but I guess Tesla can change the weights without changing the version. And they’ve likely been doing this for a while with 12.6.4. 😒

This AI system is learning from millions of Teslas out in the real world, not from geofenced areas, like literally anywhere a Tesla can drive. Tesla’s vehicles use 360 degree camera visibility, over-the-air updates, and has a neural net that keeps making the system smarter, safer, and better over time, for all Teslas. The FSD experience is so good now that manually driving already feels like the distant past. And once you’ve lived with what so many Tesla owners get to experience every day, going back to any other car feels almost impossible.

Jeff Bezos on how to be innovative “To me, true innovation is something that is not only an invention but an improvement,” Jeff explains. “It’s not hard to make things different, but it is hard to make things different and better.” In Jeff’s view, there are endless opportunities for innovation: “Most of the problems in the world already have solutions of one kind or another, and all of those solutions can be improved upon. There’s no chance that anything is perfected yet. I don’t believe that . . . People have been working on solutions to most problems for a long time, but it wasn’t that long ago that somebody figured out that you should add wheels to suitcases. Pretty good improvement!” It’s hard work though, Jeff caveats: “It’s easy to have ideas. It’s very hard to turn an idea into a successful product. There are a lot of steps in between and it takes persistence and relentlessness. I always tell people who think they want to be entrepreneurs that you need a combination of stubborn relentlessness and flexibility. And you have to know when to be which.” Jeff explains: “Basically you need to be stubborn on your vision because otherwise it’ll be too easy to give up. But you need to be very flexible on the details because as you go along pursuing your vision, you’ll find that some of your preconceptions were wrong, and you’re going to need to be able to change those things.” He concludes: “Taking an idea successfully all the way to market and turning it into a real product that people care about and really improves people’s lives is a lot of hard work.”

During the snowstorm that is sweeping through the U.S. right now, the safest vehicle you can be in is in a Tesla with FSD bc it can react faster than any human or gas car. An electric motors respond in milliseconds. When a wheel starts to slip on snow or ice, Tesla’s sensors detect it up to 1,000 times per second, and the computer instantly cuts or redistributes power to the wheels with grip. On the other hand, gas cars have major delay and don’t have this capability… That means if your Tesla hits a tiny patch of ice, the car corrects it right away, even before you even feel it, almost like the car is thinking ahead. If you don’t believe me listen to the man that built it. Joe: “What happens if you get sideways in the snow? Like, does it correct for that?” Elon: “Yeah. Electric cars have really great traction control because the reaction time is so fast. So, with a gasoline car, you’ve got a lot of latency. It takes a while for the engine to react, but for electric motors, incredibly precise…. But to an electric motor, it’s operating at the millisecond level. So, it can turn on and off traction within, like, inches of getting on… let’s say, you’re driving on a patch of ice, it will turn traction off, and then turn it on a couple inches right after the ice, like a little patch of ice because in the frame of the electric motor, you’re moving incredibly slowly. You’re like a, you’re a snail. You’re just moving so slowly because it can see at a thousand frames a second. And so, it’s like, say ‘one Mississippi’, it just thought about things a thousand times.” Joe: “So, it has realized that your wheels are not getting traction. It understands there’s some slippery surface that you’re driving on.” Elon: “Yes.” Joe: “And it makes adjustments in real-time.” Elon: “Yes, in milliseconds.” Joe: “That would be so much safer than a regular car.” AKA, buy a Tesla if you want to be in the safest car in the world. 💯

During the snowstorm that is sweeping through the U.S. right now, the safest vehicle you can be in is in a Tesla with FSD bc it can react faster than any human or gas car. An electric motors respond in milliseconds. When a wheel starts to slip on snow or ice, Tesla’s sensors detect it up to 1,000 times per second, and the computer instantly cuts or redistributes power to the wheels with grip. On the other hand, gas cars have major delay and don’t have this capability… That means if your Tesla hits a tiny patch of ice, the car corrects it right away, even before you even feel it, almost like the car is thinking ahead. If you don’t believe me listen to the man that built it. Joe: “What happens if you get sideways in the snow? Like, does it correct for that?” Elon: “Yeah. Electric cars have really great traction control because the reaction time is so fast. So, with a gasoline car, you’ve got a lot of latency. It takes a while for the engine to react, but for electric motors, incredibly precise…. But to an electric motor, it’s operating at the millisecond level. So, it can turn on and off traction within, like, inches of getting on… let’s say, you’re driving on a patch of ice, it will turn traction off, and then turn it on a couple inches right after the ice, like a little patch of ice because in the frame of the electric motor, you’re moving incredibly slowly. You’re like a, you’re a snail. You’re just moving so slowly because it can see at a thousand frames a second. And so, it’s like, say ‘one Mississippi’, it just thought about things a thousand times.” Joe: “So, it has realized that your wheels are not getting traction. It understands there’s some slippery surface that you’re driving on.” Elon: “Yes.” Joe: “And it makes adjustments in real-time.” Elon: “Yes, in milliseconds.” Joe: “That would be so much safer than a regular car.” AKA, buy a Tesla if you want to be in the safest car in the world. 💯
