Tesla consistently earns top safety ratings, and this devastating crash is a powerful example of why: In China recently, an out-of-control heavy-duty truck plowed into 13 vehicles, including a Tesla Model 3, resulting in five fatalities and one person seriously injured. The Model 3 was struck three separate times and sustained severe damage. Despite the intensity of the collision, the driver walked away unharmed—highlighting the vehicle’s structural integrity and crash protection. The owner says his next car will be either a Model 3 Performance or a Model Y Performance.

The recall covers just over 46,000 vehicles built from November 2023 through Feb. 27 of this year, Tesla said in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Tesla says the Model Y L’s rear spoiler provides 100 kg of downforce. They integrated the rear brake light into it, which provided more rear headroom for occupants. The Model Y L’s aerodynamic efficiency is impressive. It’s 2% more efficient than a standard Y, and 15% more than a Model X. The violent impact immediately triggered the airbags, protecting him from serious injury. Though shaking and trembling, he was able to walk out of the vehicle unharmed. Tragically, the DUI driver died as a result of the crash. Tesla vehicles consistently score top safety ratings, and accidents like this underscore why. A traffic police officer at the scene commented that the Tesla was a well-built vehicle and credited it with saving the owner’s life. The Model Y owner later shared a new revelation: the only true luxury about any vehicle is safety—everything else is secondary. With his vehicle totaled, he has already placed an order for another Model Y Long Range.

Other cars aren't even protected by the A-pillar in the first place. We have to choose the safest vehicle for our family. (Model Y does not participate in the test)
