Testicular cancer is a relatively rare form of cancer that primarily affects young men, typically between the ages of 15 and 35. It originates in the testicles (testes), which are responsible for producing sperm and testosterone. The most common type of testicular cancer is germ cell tumors, which can be divided into seminomas (slower-growing) and non-seminomas (more aggressive). Symptoms may include a painless lump or swelling in the testicle, discomfort, or a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum. While the exact cause of testicular cancer is unknown, factors such as a family history, undescended testicles, and certain genetic conditions can increase the risk. Testicular cancer is highly treatable, especially when caught early, with treatments typically involving surgery (orchiectomy), chemotherapy, and/or radiation, depending on the stage and type of cancer. The survival rate is high, especially for early-stage diagnoses, making early detection through self-examination or regular medical checkups crucial.
