Summer is a challenging season for wildlife, and the Tamil Nadu Forest Department has undertaken extensive measures to ensure that animals have access to water across forest habitats. The Department maintains one of the country’s largest water networks for wildlife which includes 373 borewells, 8,421 check dams, 2,734 percolation ponds, 541 water troughs, 270 waterholes, 115 open wells, 164 abd overhead tanks supplemented by natural water sources within forest landscapes. To further augment water availability this year, the Department has created additional water conservation structures, including 15 new check dams and 21 water troughs. Forest divisions have been proactively replenishing water bodies, pre-filling vulnerable water sources and supplying water through tankers wherever required to ensure uninterrupted availability during the dry months. Monitoring is being carried out through MSTrIPES, geo-tagged photographs, camera traps and real-time digital reporting systems #TNForest

Amid the devastating floods in Nepal, a herd of five wild elephants, three adults and two young calves, was swept into the powerful currents eventually reaching the Girijapuri Barrage in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh. The National Weather Service is now forecasting a crest of 24.2 feet, which would surpass the previous record crest of 23.6 feet. Flash flooding is different. #WATCH | Coimbatore | A male wild elephant known as Rolex had been frequently coming out of the forest in the Thondamuthur forest area and causing crop damage and loss of life. The elephant was constantly monitored as it emerged from the forest every night. In this situation, the elephant was anaesthetised at around 2 am on October 17 and was brought under control.
