California Vehicle Code 23123.5 strictly prohibits drivers from physically handling their phones while driving.🚨 🚫 No Holding Allowed It is now illegal to hold a phone while driving, whether or not it’s in use. Simply holding the device is a violation. ✅ Hands-Free Use Drivers may use their phones if the device is mounted on the dashboard or windshield, and all interactions are made via voice commands/a single tap/ or swipe. 📍Navigation and Music Using your phone for GPS or music? On June 23 at approximately 4:55 p.m., a Redmond officer stopped a driver near NE 76th Street and 148th Avenue NE after observing them using a handheld phone while stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, the driver continued looking at their phone instead of the road, prompting the traffic stop for distracted driving. Due to an increase in collisions, Redmond Police officers are conducting emphasis patrols focused on speeding and distracted driving in the area as part of the King County Target Zero Coalition 100 Safe Days of Summer campaign. We're proud to partner in this regional effort through Labor Day to help keep everyone safe during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. Driving a vehicle with Full Self-Driving (Supervised)? You're still the driver. These systems require your full attention, and Washington law prohibits using a handheld phone while the vehicle is in motion or under your supervision. You are 100% responsible for safely operating the vehicle and can receive the same distracted driving citation as you would in any other car. Please slow down, stay focused, and put your phone away. A text, email, or social media post can wait. The few seconds you save aren't worth risking a crash. Check out the video, and please share this reminder with the drivers in your life.
