Thames Water has been hit with the biggest ever fine for breaking rules connected to its sewage operations. Susanna Reid asks Water Minister Emma Hardy if she can see the argument for renationalising the water industry.

@susannareid100 The maximum sentence for fly tipping is 5 years in prison. That is exactly what those executives at Thames Water should have received. Instead, they will just slap that fine onto customers bills next year.

@susannareid100 Why didn’t she answer the question? Why are WE, the taxpayers, paying for 2 new reservoirs? Why are WE, the taxpayers, paying the fines of the water companies? May as well renationalise the water companies.

@susannareid100 I don't see the point in imposing fines upon companies because they pass those costs onto the consumer whereas a jail sentence will have an immediate impact. Furthermore there has to be evaluations of the circumstances to ascertain if sewage spills were unavoidable.

@susannareid100 Thames water will raise bills to cover it's costs. But she doesn't care about that. As long as the government are seen yo be doing something
