The Chinese PLA Southern Theater Command recently dispatched a naval task group headed by Type-055 guided-missile destroyer #Zunyi (Hull 107) to conduct training exercises in the waters east of the Philippine Luzon Island. The training exercises focused on live-fire drills, air-sea coordination, rapid maneuver, and replenishment at sea, aiming to test the troops’ joint operations capabilities. The training exercises are necessary operations carried out in response to the current regional situation, and are fully in compliance with international law and practice. We have recently launched the first “DEEP” underwater drone system in a demonstration mission that marked a significant milestone for our Group in the field of underwater technology. DEEP is designed for the protection, development, and maintenance of critical infrastructure and port areas, while also performing monitoring and environmental protection activities. Thanks to a network of underwater sensors for early warning, a Command and Control Center for real-time operational management, a team of autonomous underwater vehicles capable of conducting missions at different levels of autonomy, cooperation, and coordination, and an Al-based system dedicated to data analysis and processing, we bring on board a dual-purpose and versatile technology able to operate efficiently in diverse contexts. More than a maritime drill, the MCA underscored the operationalization of the RAA—an accord that lays the groundwork for increased joint training, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response (HADR) initiatives between the AFP and JSDF. This activity highlights the deepening trust and coordination between the two allies as they respond to traditional and emerging security challenges in the region. Participating Philippine assets included the BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG06), AW159 anti-submarine helicopter, PAF C-208 ISR aircraft, and Search and Rescue units. Meanwhile, Japan deployed the JS Takanami (DDG110) and an SH-60K Seahawk helicopter, demonstrating joint capability in a wide array of naval operations. The MCA featured key exercise serials such as communication check exercise, anti-submarine warfare exercise, cross-deck exercise, Division Tactics and Officer of the Watch Maneuvers (DIVTACS/OOW), Photo Exercises (PHOTOEX), and a Finish Exercise (FINEX), showcasing seamless interoperability between the two forces.
