“Xanadu” was written and produced by Jeff Lynne specifically for the 1980 musical fantasy film Xanadu. Performed by Olivia Newton-John with the Electric Light Orchestra, the song was recorded at Musicland Studios in Munich, with Olivia providing the lead vocals and ELO contributing the instrumentation and backing vocals. Released in 1980, “Xanadu” became a major international hit, reaching No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks and No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also topped the charts in several European countries and became the only UK No. 1 credited to ELO. The film's dance sequences had already been shot to an earlier demo of the song. When ELO recorded the final version, they had to match the demo's tempo so the finished recording would synchronise with the footage, giving the song its slightly unusual rhythmic feel.

i know people have a lot of opinions about xanadu (1980) but i’m sorry this is the best movie musical closing number ever! nothing tops this level of 80s camp WITH gene kelly roller skating alongside olivia newton-john!

XANADU 1980 is an enigma. It's a horrible film, known as one of the worst ever made, yet it has great songs, and great scenes in it, including Don Bluth animation, and the final performance by Gene Kelly. And of course Olivia Newton-John bless her.

Gene Kelly was almost 70 years old, in his final film performance, and he could still roller skate! What a legend. RIP Olivia Newton-John! Xanadu was one of my favourite movies ...can't believe it's been 45 years since I saw it in the theatre. For me, this will always be the sound of summer in 1980. Grease is 47 years old today. This John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John musical, featuring the oldest teenagers ever (Stockard Channing was 33) was a cultural phenomenon. For a while, it was the third highest grossing movie of all time. Even the soundtrack sold over 30 million copies

After the youthful energy of Grease, let's step back into the elegance of Classic Hollywood through Gene Kelly's final film role. This charming duet, "Whenever You're Away From Me" from Xanadu (1980), pairs Kelly with the lovely Olivia Newton-John. Kelly was around 68 years old, but choreographed the dance himself, which was the last sequence filmed. While age had inevitably softened his athleticism, his unmistakable grace is still there. A beautiful farewell from one of cinema's greatest dancers. ❤️ #Xanadu #GeneKelly #OliviaNewtonJohn
