The idea of God's Chosen people is a the remnant of Bronze age polytheism. This idea was common and not unique to the Israelites - but different in its polytheistic form. In exchange for worship, the patron God would provide protection resources good harvests etc. This idea is known formally in the Bible as the covenant. For the Babylonians the patron God was Marduk, for the Assyrians it was Ashur, for the Sumerians of Uruk it was Ishtar, for Ugarit it was Baal. For the israelites, it was Yahweh This Bronze Age belief system passed over into Judaism, and was reinterpreted within a monotheistic context, hence the chosen people of the only existing God morphing into a belief that can become supremacist.
