DBZ and Sailor Moon kinda went beyond anime for the west, you have dragon ball and sailor moon fans, but that does not mean that they were anime fans, just fans of DB and SM

I may rag on Gundam Wing to hell, but none of that ragging is mutually exclusive to the fact that it probably was THE best one to be marketed first to the Western sphere. I only lament that SEED doesn't get unfairly maligned, and X isn't cursed to live in its shadow

Yeah, no. Even if wing weren't every bad anime trope rolled into a neat little package, it was already preceded by much better series like Sailor Moon, Ghost In The Shell, and Macross.

You cannot underestimate how big toonami was at its height and Gundam Wing was THE toonami show and its popularity due to toonami is why wing is so popular today.

Sure, and Inuyasha was THE Bionix show here in Canada. I'd still say Cardcaptors did more to popularize anime in Canada than Inuyasha did

One Piece wasn't even popular until 12-15 years ago. Everyone seems to forget just how shitty 4kids was. Meanwhile there's Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, Big O and Cowboy Bebop on Toonami/Adult Swim that made Tom must see tv for a generation.

Wing and DBZ were honestly the things that kicked it off, but Toonami wasn't the only source of overseas anime: In Latinamerica we had an Argentinian channel called Magic Kids, brought us Sailor Moon, DBGT, and CN had Saint Seiya, Inuyasha, YuYuHakusho all dubbed as well.

Such an US answer) Also when i was a kid in Russia, we had Speed Racer, Robotech, Voltron, Grendaizer and Sailor Moon on TV. No one knew word "anime" or was aware of Gundam. Only near the end of 90s we had some anime clubs, and mainstream awareness happened with Naruto and Bleach
