What makes this scene so heartbreaking in Toothless case is that the moment he either breaks free or is released from mind-control, he is at first confused of what happened, then shocked of seeing Stoick dead, and finally hurt of Hiccup rejecting him, even if it wasn't his fault.

hard to really blame hiccup for pushing toothless away, of course he knows toothless weren't in control and weren't at fault, but it's still the face that killed his dad. though of course you gotta feel bad for toothless too, he has no idea what just happend and why his friend is reacting like that

Tbf I think more shows need to do this with "brainwashed characters turning on the protagonist" plots where even after the character snapped out of it, the damage is done and the rest of the cast can no longer trust them
