That’s a home run, right?

Feet were touching the ‘flexible’ fence the moment the ball was caught in her glove, so the correct call is that I don’t know.

Technically, a close reading of the rules say since it is girls' softball, who cares?

No because she caught the ball

Just got off the phone with the International Girl's Softball Association and they said "It's definitely a homerun. Or an out. We don't care, whatever makes the girls happy is fine with us."

Batter is out. However, that’s a dead ball and any player on base at the time moves up. Considered a “catch-and-carry” play into dead-ball territory.

OUT!!!!

Anyone else have a problem that the fence is basically 3 feet tall?

If I am coaching the white team, I am getting thrown out arguing. Also, idk what the rule is, but I am getting tossed.

The amount of people in this thread that don't know that's an out blows my mind. A beautiful play.

It’s an out. If anyone was on base though they get to advance 1 base because she left the field of play.

100% an out !

Thats an out. I’m a 9U umpire so I know things.

why is the back fence waist-high and flexible

Nope. As long as the fielder leaves the field of play and catches the ball before she lands, it’s a catch no matter where she lands.

Looks like even both of her feet were beyond the fence when the ball was caught, no part of her body was within the field of play. I'm saying HR. Heck of a catch though.

Of course. Ball left the yard. Need to keep your body in the field of play during the catch. Some foul balls they allow some leeway, like famous Jeter face plant catch.

It's an out. A fielder can leap over a fence to make a catch, and it's a valid out, provided they have secure possession of the ball before touching the ground or anything on the other side of the fence (like stands or a dugout). That's the rulebook folks.

Nope, that's a homerun. Fantastic effort but not a legal catch. The outfielder steps into/through the fence/barrier to make the catch. If she had jumped at the fence and made the catch it would be an out.

I feel like the rule *should* be that ball is a home run, but whatever the rule is, they're all so happy, and the catch was so extraordinary, just let her have the out, whatever the rule actually is. Give the batter some kind of make-up call later in the game, everybody wins.

As long as two feet touch when catching the ball before you go out of bounds. You must continue the catch all the way through to rhe ground! Oh wait this is softball. Sorry nobody knows!

Opposite of football. She caught the ball before she landed out of bounds. Out.

Assuming it's the same as baseball; So long as one foot is even over the field of play when the catch is made, it's a catch. No difference between HR and foul ball out of play. It's a dead ball, though. Any runners advance. "Catch and carry"

So I guess you can just hop the 2.5 foot fence catch the ball and hop back in and it’s an out? Why not just put a fielder out there when their power hitter is up? Wow, can’t believe I’m overthink this! 😊

In MLB, the catch must be completed while the fielder has at least one or both feet on or above the playing surface (live-ball territory). The ball must be securely possessed before fully entering dead-ball territory (e.g., stands or bullpen). Not sure in girls softball.

She left the field of play by diving and caught the ball before hitting the ground, out in y opinion, no different to an outfielder climbing the padding to take a catch

Nice catch but it’s a HR.

Clearly an out. You didn’t learn anything from bugs bunny?

No. It looks like both feet are beyond the fence, so it should be ruled a homerun.

That is a home run, her feet were clearly past the playing field boundary when the catch was made! (fence was bent backwards) However that was a hell of an effort on her part

It’s a catch. Has nothing to do with the fence. Batter is out.

Hommer. They can celebrate all they want. Ball over the fence unless its brought back into play when caught its gone.

House rules there may differ, but generally, the fielder has to stay in the field of play for it to be considered an out. Catch the ball but land outside the field and it’s a home run.

It absolutely is a home. You can't run out into the parking lot and catch a home run and call it an out. What's the point of having a fence, otherwise? Or another take,.. if the fence was solid,.. she would never have caught the ball. The fence would have prevented her from reaching the ball.

on one hand she caught the ball while her feet were touching the boundaries, on the other hand she landed out of bounds. so i'm on the fence about it
