They featured a ¾ horsepower mounted engine underneath the aluminum tub. To start it, you'd mix gas and oil, choke it, and give the kick-starter pedal a firm stomp—very much like kick-starting an old motorcycle. Once running, the engine powered the agitator and the wringer. Laundry day literally started with filling the tank with gasoline and a good boot to the pedal. These machines were a game-changer for farm families, and over half a million were sold. Some even came with optional attachments to churn butter or grind meat!
