The state of California is quietly passing a law that will a non family member adult to take guardianship over any minor with a simple form. In that form there is a box to check if “parents cannot be located”. The author states this is meant for families where the parent has been deported, however no where in the bill does this apply only to one demographic. The solution is not judicial leniency, cultural excuses, or “cultural defenses” that allow offenders to escape full accountability simply because they come from countries or cultures with different norms. Laws that protect individual rights must take clear and absolute precedence over any conflicting cultural practices or claims of ignorance. Not all cultures are equal.
