The state of California is quietly passing a law that will a non family member adult to take guardianship over any minor with a simple form. In that form there is a box to check if “parents cannot be located”. The author states this is meant for families where the parent has been deported, however no where in the bill does this apply only to one demographic. I believe that every state should exist as a democratic society with equal rights for all people. Yet, Israel's current configuration is instead widely recognized as an apartheid, with a two-tiered legal system for Israeli settlers and for Palestinians in the West Bank. We must end the apartheid, end the genocide in Gaza, and win self-determination for everyone who calls the region home.

I believe that every state should exist as a democratic society with equal rights for all people. The solution is not judicial leniency, cultural excuses, or “cultural defenses” that allow offenders to escape full accountability simply because they come from countries or cultures with different norms. Laws that protect individual rights must take clear and absolute precedence over any conflicting cultural practices or claims of ignorance. Not all cultures are equal. Not all legal systems are equal. The only law that applies is the law of the land, the one that upholds natural rights, which are the only genuine rights. Judges need to do the right thing.
