🇨🇳 Many people don't know this but Chinese high speed trains are now the fastest in the word and officially faster than even the 🇯🇵 Japanese Shinkansen Chinese trains go 350-400km/h (217-250mph) depending on the model While the Japanese Shinkansen goes 320km/h (200mph) max So I went to try it from Chengdu to Chongqing (just $80 for biz class) This one is the slightly older 350km/h model The business class cabin has 5 big seats that can lay flat with a stewardess dedicated to the cabin who serves you drinks like coffee, water, orange juice etc. I guess if it's a longer trip you probably get food served too The journey was very smooth and very fast, it maintained close to 350km/h at all times and there wasn't many stops or breaks (good) It didn't have WiFi, which is kind of a miss but it seems Chinese just use 5G for everything which worked fine for me without interrruption too I'd say the interior could be a bit more beautiful and modern. I usually say things in Japan look ancient but I think the Shinkansen interior there looks a bit more modern than here The trip took 1 hour and it passed about 300km in that time, roughly equivalent to the width of my country the Netherlands 😂 Anyway solid experience (and cheap!) 👍

Today is UN Chinese Language Day—a perfect moment to celebrate one of the most influential writing systems in human history. For thousands of years, the cultures of China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam were deeply shaped by Chinese civilization. Until the early 20th century, Classical Chinese served as the shared literary and scholarly language across East Asia, much like Latin did in Europe. Chinese characters (汉字 / 漢字) became the common script of the region, later adapted locally as Kanji in Japan, Hanja in Korea, and Chữ Hán in Vietnam. Over time, each country developed its own writing innovations to better express their spoken languages: • Japan created Hiragana (平仮名) and Katakana (片仮名). • Korea invented Hangul (한글). • Vietnam eventually adopted the Latin-based Vietnamese alphabet. Yet the story of Chinese characters themselves is truly fascinating. 🇨🇳 The Legend of Cangjie According to ancient Chinese tradition, the characters were invented by Cangjie (仓颉), a legendary scribe under the Yellow Emperor around the 27th century BCE. While observing the tracks of birds and animals, the patterns of nature, and the constellations in the sky, he created the first symbols—zì (字). Legend says that on the day he succeeded, grains of rice rained from the heavens, and that night ghosts wept—because humanity had just gained the power of written wisdom. UN Chinese Language Day is observed annually on April 20, which was chosen as the date "to pay tribute to Cangjie, who is presumed to have invented Chinese characters about 5,000 years ago". Chinese characters are the world’s oldest continuously used writing system and one of the most widely used by number of speakers. In Chinese mainland since the 1950s, the government promoted simplified characters to boost literacy. Meanwhile, traditional characters continue to thrive in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. You’ll still see both versions depending on the context—books, signs, calligraphy, or digital media. 🇯🇵 Japan: Kanji + Kana Chinese writing reached Japan around the 5th century CE. Something big is happening in robotics - and it’s hiding in plain sight. This post is not about dancing robots but in the data that powers them. Open robotics datasets have exploded this year, turning the field into a more scalable and collaborative ecosystem. In just two years, Hugging Face datasets grew from 11k to over 600k - and robotics is by far the fastest-growing segment. We went from 1k robotics datasets in 2024 to 27k in 2025! For comparison, text generation, the second-largest category, has only around 5k datasets in 2025. That gap is massive. Open datasets are important because robotics lives and dies by real-world robot data - video, actions, sensors, failures. By making this data easy to upload, reuse, and benchmark, researchers, startups, and large players are now releasing real-robot datasets that would have stayed locked inside labs just a few years ago. Major contributors include NVIDIA, LeRobot initiative, and a rapidly growing maker community. This surge is also enabled by cheaper video storage, better tooling, and an open-source AI culture now spilling into the physical world. And it really matters: open robotics data dramatically lowers entry barriers, accelerates learning-by-doing, and speeds up progress toward generalist and humanoid robots.
