The 90s were a great decade for turn-based strategy games. Civilization, Colonization, Master of Orion, Heroes of Might and Magic, Warlords... and the list goes on and on. One game that feels underappreciated when looking back on that era is Ascendancy (The Logic Factory, 1995). What stood out right... from the start was the design/style. Ascendancy not only looked very different, it also had a very novel approach to the tech tree (which was less linear compared to other strategy games), a unique ship design, and a well balanced and complex diplomacy system. The overall goal is to lead your alien race to victory, through colonization of other planets, building a fleet, exploring, and researching new technologies (incl. weapon and shield systems). The music is another aspect that differentiates Ascendancy from other games of the time. Hard to describe it other than "spacey, soothing, a little haunting at times" - if you played the game you know what I mean. It was fitting the game's vibe perfectly. The Logic Factory made one more game after this one: The Tone Rebellion - which flopped (sadly). So, essentially they;re one of those rare "one hit wonder" game studios that only hardcore fans will remember. If you liked Master of Orion, you should give Ascendancy a try.show more

Another masterpiece turning 30 this year... one of the best turn-based strategy games I ever played: Master of Orion II (Simtex, 1996). A huge improvement over the already excellent original from 1993, Master of Orion II gives sci-fi/strategy nerds everything they need: colonizing planets, terraforming, building infrastructure, researching a gazillion ships, weapons, shields and other tech, diplomacy with alien races, epic space battles, and - of course - black hole generators to swallow capital ships in one go! The graphics were excellent, the intro got you hyped right from the start, different paths to victory (with varying end credit cutscenes), a slightly eerie/spacey soundtrack, and almost endless replayability made this game near perfect. It truly deserves a spot among the great strategy games of the 90s alongside Civilization and Alpha Centauri.

Considering all the greats from the 90s era, I think the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise is among the very, very top. Incredibly beautiful and detailed graphics, a wonderful soundtrack, and classic turn-based gameplay; all that made for perfect late night sessions that usually went on for way too long. It was the stereotypical "maybe just one more round" game that kept on going... if you've been there, you know. Heroes of Might and Magic is one of the longest living franchises in gaming history, now entering its 31st year, with the first release in 1995 and latest release in 2025 (Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era). If you were/are a turn-based strategy fan, I bet you played it. I miss New World Computing...

I will always associate Bullfrog Productions with innovation, daring to take risks, and trying unconventional ideas. That approach didn't just evolve later in their timeline of games but was pretty evident early on. Populous (1989) is widely recognized as the origin of God games. I remember having zero idea what to do when first playing it but being instantly hooked. Over time I figured it out, what the goal of the game was, how the mana bar worked, what effect the disasters had, how to raise or flatten land - I mean, think about how many other games before allowed you to cast an earthquake spell on your enemy, or to terraform the land around you, letting your hero cross the seas to wreak havoc on enemy peasants. Pure glorious mayham, fun, and a very novel concept. Obviously, the graphics look a bit dated now (though I love that pixel style), however the concept itself feels timeless. Populous is the game that first comes to mind when I see the Bullfrog logo, but it was not their only unique and ground-breaking game. One of the best developers of the 80s and 90s, truly missed if you ask me.

Panzer General's structure was much simpler compared to SSI's traditional deep, simulation-heavy titles like those from Gary Grigsby (such as Panzer Strike, Battlegroup or Typhoon of Steel), but this move opened up their games to a more mainstream audience - and ultimately making Panzer General a commercial success. Sequels such as Fantasy General (1996) or Allied General (1995) were based on the same engine. I always liked turn-based strategy games (Battle Isle, Master of Orion, Civilization), so Panzer General was one of the many classics of the 90s, arguably the peak decade for such games.

I know that most people will discard this as "just nostalgia", but for anyone who played games back in the 90s, this screen hits right into the feels. The art style, the music, the simple but beautiful menu design... and most importantly, knowing that you would soon be diving head-first into one of the best games ever. This comes pretty close to what perfection looked like in the 90s, and in many ways it still feels better than 99% of anything that came since. Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness (1995) by Blizzard, a game studio that was cementing its legacy one hit at a time until they reached heights too close to the sun.

I lost count of how many times I finished the campaign, over and over again. Pretty much everything about this game is brilliant. The concept, the flow of the game, the graphics (very vibrant and colourful), the soundtrack (simply wonderful), the little RPG elements for your heroes, finding artefacts, the battle system, and the spells. I could go on, but I am sure anyone who played this feels pretty much the same. It's exactly the type of game I would pay money for to replay in a modern setting, with a map editor and the ability to add different units and attributes to each. The Heroes of Might and Magic series is one of the best ever, and I still always come back to number II.

Westwood was such an amazing game studio. One of their timeless classics is Eye of the Beholder 2, which was released in 1991. The intro alone gave me nerd chills - anyone who ever played Dungeons & Dragons would remember Khelben Blackstaff, and if he considers you his friend, what an honour! The game itself is your typical dungeon crawler. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way but appreciating it for what it was and is, a great game of its genre. Excellent graphics (I am such a sucker for that 90s pixel style), good sound effects and music, and an easy to use interface, making the real-time fights fast paced but manageable. Among the greats of Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, Ultima, and Wizardry, the likes of Eye of the Beholder or Lands of Lore were probably a tier below, but I always loved coming back to them. To me, this game is emblematic of the early 90s, and for that I love it.

Fun Fact: When Punch-Out!! first came out for the NES (1987), Mike Tyson was asked if he was able to beat himself in the game. He responded that he couldn't even get past Glass Joe. So remember, whenever you laugh at Joe's 1-99 record, the one person Glass Joe beat was Mike Tyson. Whether that myth is true or not, I don't know, but one thing is for sure - this was one of the most fun games I ever played. There are a few iconic games for the NES, and to me Punch Out!! is one of those. It was the classic "Ah, one more try" type of game, trying to reach that next level and ultimately fighting against Mike Tyson. Though a single-player game, this was the most fun when you had your friends around and everyone "being in your corner" cheering you on to get the T(KO). Good times!

Yes, this is pillars from ETI; but what’s awesome about pillars and when all light dies is - they were the final two of ETI that were written. These two tracks were the best foreshadowing of the devastation to come from ascendancy. I’m also very excited to unleash my voice on all of you in a way it hasn’t been since… 2005 live.

Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos (Westwood Studios, 1993) had one of the best intros and in-game cutscenes of the early 90s. Hearing Captain Picard utter those words was the ultimate nerd chill moment! It's a classic dungeon crawler, highly popular at the time when other games like Dungeon Master, Might and Magic, Wizardry, or Eye of the Beholder were hugely successful. Unlike other RPGs at the time, the goal was to appeal to a less "pro" audience, meaning that the essential aspects such as character generation (rolling/assigning stat points, etc.) was dropped in favor of pre-made characters. Less true to the traditional Advanced Dungeon's & Dragons system, Lands of Lore was supposed to be "easier to get into" even for inexperienced players. Other traditional aspects like finding armor, weapons, and potions were kept. If you liked Eye of the Beholder or the Might and Magic series, Lands of Lore was probably also high on your list. Defintely a must play for any RPG fan of the 90s.

The Dig (LucasArts, 1995) didn't achieve the same impact or cult status as Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, or Indiana Jones, but I played the crap out of it back in the day. In terms of immersion, it was one of LucasArts' best games ever and a true milestone of 90s adventure games. It was highly praised by magazines but lost points for (too) high difficulty, making it one of the era's toughest adventures - and thus diverging from LucasArts' typical style which was more on the easy/moderate level of difficulty. I wasn't able to finish it without a walkthrough from one of the game magazines back then (Internet wasn't really a mainstream thing yet). The visuals and music of The Dig remain absolutely incredible, even over three decades later. The large sprites, the amazing choice and composition of colours (The Dig just looked so different!), the movie like vibe - I found this one to stand out and always wondered why unlike many other adventure games this one never got a sequel. It certainly deserved one.

One distinct memory I have from playing games in the 80s was that every once in a while I would stumble across a game that looked epic but I had exactly zero clue what to do. Wizball was such a game. Looked and sounded pretty cool, but... "where to go, what to do, and what's the goal here?" - something along those lines went through my mind at the time. I stuck with it an eventually (much later) figured it out. Do you remember a game that you played but didn't really know what the goal was or how to get there?

Back in the ‘90s, there was one arcade game you were almost guaranteed to find: Irem’s Ninja Baseball Bat Man. It was incredibly fun, and with support for up to four players, it was one of the best games to enjoy with friends. But did you know this? While the game was a huge hit in South Korea, it received a fairly lukewarm response in Japan and was released in very limited numbers in North America, making it virtually unknown there. Pretty strange, isn’t it? One of the reasons I loved this game was that, unlike most Irem titles, it wasn’t brutally difficult. You could have a great time with just a single credit. Most Irem games were known for their gritty atmosphere, incredibly detailed pixel art, and punishing difficulty. This one, however, stood out with its bright colors and cute, round character designs, giving it a completely different feel. Back in the ‘90s, there was one arcade game you were almost guaranteed to find: Irem’s Ninja Baseball Bat Man. It was incredibly fun, and with support for up to four players, it was one of the best games to enjoy with friends. But did you know this? While the game was a huge hit in South Korea, it received a fairly lukewarm response in Japan and was released in very limited numbers in North America, making it virtually unknown there. Pretty strange, isn’t it? One of the reasons I loved this game was that, unlike most Irem titles, it wasn’t brutally difficult. You could have a great time with just a single credit. Most Irem games were known for their gritty atmosphere, incredibly detailed pixel art, and punishing difficulty. This one, however, stood out with its bright colors and cute, round character designs, giving it a completely different feel. If you’ve never played it before, do yourself a favor and try it on an emulator.
