The Old Covenantal Framework In the Old Testament, God chose the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to be a set-apart nation. This was not due to any inherent superiority of the people themselves, but to fulfill God's redemptive purpose in bringing the Messiah into the world. In Deuteronomy 7:7-8, God explicitly tells Israel: "The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors." This covenant was conditional and focused on the faithful observance of the Law, which served as a guardian until the arrival of the promised Seed, which is Christ (Galatians 3:19). The Shift: The New Covenant The transition from a national, ethnic identity to a spiritual, global identity occurred through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Christianity teaches that the Church is the true Israel - the assembly of those who have been grafted into the promises of Abraham through faith in Christ. The New Testament makes it clear that ethnic identity is no longer the metric for being part of God's chosen. As the Apostle Paul writes in Romans 9:6-8: "For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, 'It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.' In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring." Why and How? The "why" is the universal scope of the Gospel. Christ died not just for one ethnic group, but for the elect of all nations. The "how" is through the New Covenant in His blood, which supersedes the Old. Galatians 3:28-29: "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise." 1 Peter 2:9: "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." This verse explicitly applies the terminology previously reserved for the Old Testament nation of Israel to the Church. What Changed? The change is the arrival of the Substance after the shadows. The ceremonies, priesthood, and land promises of the Old Testament were types and shadows pointing toward the reality found in Christ (Colossians 2:16-17). Once the Messiah arrived and was rejected by the leadership of the Jewish nation, the kingdom was taken from those who rebelled against it and given to a people who would produce its fruit (Matthew 21:43). Modern rabbinic Judaism, which emerged after the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD, is a fundamentally different religion from that of the Old Testament. It rejects the Lord Jesus Christ. (actually says he's boiling in hell in human feces) Christianity holds that there is no separate path to God for those who reject the Messiah. The promises are now inherited by the Church - the true people of God - comprised of every tribe, tongue, and nation that confesses Him as Lord.
