"I don’t call 'The Apartment' (1960) a comedy. I felt at that moment Billy Wilder was at the height of his powers. It’s a brilliant use of comedy and drama. It was daring in its directness." --- Jack Lemmon

Evening viewing recommendation? On the Criterion Channel, celebrate the great Billy Wilder (born on this day in 1906) with THE APARTMENT (1960)—one of his most beloved films. ❤️ Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, THE APARTMENT expertly balances mirth and melancholy, finding romance amid the loneliness of corporate life in midcentury Manhattan.

Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine in a scene from The Apartment (1960), directed by Billy Wilder. • For this film, Billy Wilder became the first person to win the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. • Jack Lemmon said he learned much about filmmaking from Billy Wilder, particularly the director's use of “hooks”, bits of business the audience remembers long after they've forgotten other aspects of the movie. One such hook was the passing of the key to Baxter's apartment. Lemmon said for years after the picture's release, people would come up to him and say, “Hey, Jack, can I have the key?”. • Billy Wilder originally thought of the idea for the film after seeing Brief Encounter (1945) and wondering about the plight of a character unseen in that film ― the person who lends his apartment for an extramarital tryst. Shirley MacLaine was only given forty pages of the script because Wilder didn't want her to know how the story would turn out. She thought it was because the script wasn't finished.

After completing "Some Like it Hot" (1959), Billy Wilder wanted to make a film on the idea he had from around the 1940s. He wanted to make a film about the unseen character in David Lean's "Brief Encounter" (1945) who loans the apartment for the rendezvous of the main characters. He always thought there was a funny and touching character there to explore. He wanted to work with Jack Lemmon again after "Some Like it Hot" and thought he would be perfect for this role. According to Jack Lemmon, he was offered the role by Wilder, when they were on the way to a private screening of "Some Like it Hot" in a car. ("On Sunset Boulevard: The Life and Times of Billy Wilder", Ed Sikov, 1998) P.S: On this day, 66 years ago, "The Apartment" (1960) New York City & San Francisco, USA.
