From Apollo to Artemis: Artemis II will be the first flight with crew aboard the Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. Similar to the Apollo 8 mission, Artemis II will fly around the moon to confirm all the spacecraft’s systems operate as designed with crew aboard in the actual environment of deep space. The far side of the moon isn’t just the “dark side," it’s older, rougher, and full of clues about how the solar system formed. Here’s why scientists are so interested in it and why missions like Artemis II are heading there. Read about this week’s Artemis II launch here:

The NASA Artemis II crew is looping around the Moon! Our exoplanet-hunter TESS performed a similar flyby in 2018. This maneuver gave it a gravity assist to get into a unique orbit to scan the sky, searching for worlds beyond our solar system and more.

While the Artemis II crew are experiencing their own personal solar eclipse, Mission Control will temporarily lose communications with the capsule. This is planned and expected. We anticipate regaining communications in about 30 minutes.

The NASA Artemis II crewed mission around the Moon will inspire the next generation of explorers, and show every child – in America, in Canada, and across the world – that if they can dream it, they can be it.

The crew module on Orion has separated from its service module. After traveling around the Moon, seeing its far side, and experiencing a solar eclipse, the Artemis II astronauts are on the last leg of their trip home.

NASA astronauts are returning to the Moon. President Donald J. Trump took the most meaningful step forward in space since the Kennedy administration by establishing Artemis. In his second term, he signed the One Big Beautiful Bill, giving NASA the resources to execute, and now Artemis II is on the launchpad. In the days ahead, the brave crew of Artemis II will launch potentially farther into space than humans have ever gone before, nearly 250,000 miles away from Earth. Artemis III will follow in 2027, testing one or both commercial landers in low Earth orbit, followed by Artemis IV, which will put American boots back on the lunar surface - not for flags and footprints, but to stay, to build the Moon Base.

On Aug. 12, a total solar eclipse crosses Iceland and Spain. Iceland’s volcanic terrain helped train the Artemis II Moon crew; Spain offers clearer skies. NASA-funded teams are in both — because spreading out is how you beat the clouds. Watch live with NASA:
